Totally New THUNDER Map (THUNDER II)
 
Well guys, and gals.
I have been walking around the house for the past month.
Wondering.. whats next.....
I have started a few map creations, but terminating them from lack of intrest.
So.. I have been thinking. How about a totally new version of THUNDER.
Good idea? Bad idea?
These are the things that would stay in the map
1. Night time theme.
2. Fog
3. Lightning
4. Destroyed buildings
5. Each side has a Mansion for main base
6. each side seperated by a field or trench

Some added features will be
1. Falling Rain

Now.. If I could get some feed back about:
What was it you liked about THUNDER?
What didnt you like?

Please any feed back will help everyones benifit

It's a very laggy map for me and I have a nice comp.. try taking out the explosions and such or something :) (btw I still do love thunder)

it's a very nice map but you have to play it with a lot of people because it's so big, i like deathmatch maps with ten or fewer people and i don't get any lag from your map

Well I must say, I have enjoyed all your "Thunder" maps. I think they are the longest running maps on the aa.com game server.

What I would like to see, is a river with one or two rather large bridges. I love bridge maps.

it would be nice if you could gain access to the top of the bridge like the Germans did in " a bridge to far" Makes for some nice sniper spots.

maybe one big trestle bridge and a small pontoon bridge as another way of crossing.

Hey just my 2cents. Then again I have faith in your mapping skills. Look forward to what every you come up with.

As far as for explosions. At this point there will not be, but as the map comes together, explosions might be added. I understand the fps issue with explosions and how they are hard on some slower comps.

Size of the map. THUNDER was designed to be a large map, and will continue to be one. Thanks for the reply

Now as for a bridge. It is a possiablity. If I can come up with a design layout of how the bridge can be differant then other bridge maps.
I have some ideas floating. could very well happen.

Can you fix the Spawns???

Pain when you about to complete OBJ and you kill an Axis and he respawns about 5 feet away ,kinda hard to complete the OBJ with them like that.

We removed it from our server cos of that.

Make it no respawn or place them further from the OBJ.

Hm... another great map Creation.. Great Idea.

Thunder I, was a nice map, although i've really only played the origonal one, before all the middle bulidings. But the idea i would Have is this.

More random Spwan points. as I remember a lot of the spwan points, were behind the "Home Bases" or those bulidings, now this was not a problem, not as much as The one in normandy, anyway... I am sort of out of gas on the spwan point situation, but just keep that in mind.

Now, my idea would be.. its alittle to late, but I always wanted maps with a story line, like a follow up to that map depending on the out come of the map before, But this at the moment is sort of out of the question.

What would be nice is a simular theme, with possibly a few bridges, and a stream.

If it is a city i wouldn't mind a "Small" and rather dark sewers.
and Not riverside sewers either, but simular concept....

Now this is where i'll stop cause i am basicly making up a totaly new map design.

So run free, and make another great map!

Oh, a Obj and a TDM version (like the original Thunder) was not a bad idea.

I would never mind an assualt with both sides possesing a tank or Flaks, and Jeeps, Overtaking a City, with exploading bulidings*. Man, i have tons of ideas, to bad I can't figure out the mapping "Thing"

* Although The old tank map really slowed my computer down, and i generally have High FPS, no madder the map. So an conservetive attidude is always a plus.

I agree with Kdja. Thunder is one of the greatest maps ever, I have seen all the maps and really think that Thunder is the best (should have won the mapping contest but I guess you didn't participate). The only thing sad about it is indeed the respawn, allways rushing...spawning...rushing...spawning (you just don't care about whether you die or not).
Fix that and your map will be the first in my top-10 list.

Here 's a fantastic map idea: a map with a river and controlable Higgings boats would really rock, like BF42 (see signature). So you can load in people and try making it to the other side (with some fog added to cover the boats and maybe a Flak to bigzooka: at em).

It would be my pleasure to help you building it but I guess you rather map alone. Great job though

Yea. I would have to agree. The location of the OBJ wasnt best it could have been.
Some servers have edited the .scr file and removed respawn.

As for the editing contest.
I believe your speaking of the European map editors contest.
Those winners have been selected and posted.
No, I did not submit to that contest.

I did submit to EA's level editors contest for the expansion pack.
The winners have yet to be posted.

We removed Thunder OBJ from our server as i was to lazy to ask permission to change the spawns ....hehehehe

We left DM on good map has a nice play to it even in 1 v1 or 10 v 10 (a hard balance to get)

Tho on thinking about it maybe its the Spawns are fine but the OBj could be moved.

Like:

A Tank in the centre (would need to add roads)
Where Axis have to move the tank to their base and Aliies have to destroy or both have to destroy.

Be an interesting twist to see who is brave enough to go into the centre.

From reading numerous WW2 books its a common scenario where getting to "no mans land" was an objective for both sides.

The level would need some redesigning to make it possible to complete OBJ (maybe a tunnel from left to right with access on either side that leads to the tank in the centre)
And minimal cover on both sides in the final few feet as you near the tank.


Am i evil or am i just mad ;p

I just like to see new twists added to maps where an OBJ is a tactical decision instead of a rush n attack scenario.

I play at Crow King mostly - when he had 55 slots open he was running thunder, and that with CKR is incredible. One thing though - it needs underground access. Maybe a couple of crawlspaces from house to house. Also, I felt as if the OBJ was a little too "gridish" in the middle - it was too cramped and straight - lined. Just some input. Thanks!

IF you can try to make the next version a little less linear, and try adding a push/acceleration/ctf style objective to it instead of the usual "blow me up" routine, it would be real "cool". Personally, im very disappointed how many good mappers make really good looking maps but the maps end up being too linear. Spawning was a big problem in Thunder, like was mentioned above, more spread out and random.

Thats my two cents and a nickel.

Yes, CTF or flag match is a very strong issue at this point.
I would like to see more maps like that too.

I don't see any reason why there can not be a CTF or flag match version in the next release.

It is an impressive map. I only play the TDM version though, and I notice that the gates of the mansion no longer open from outside in. This means axis cannot get to allied unless they've left the mansion grounds.

It is too big though. I don't mean that to be a criticism, as the map is brilliant, but I reckon most people that download and serve 'user maps' are going to have too little bandwidth to ever get enough players in there.

So - A mini Thunder map would be excellent. Haven't a clue how to do it myself though, so I'll just wait to see what you make next and I'm sure I'll enjoy it whatever the size.

Ok, first off, Great Maps, i've spent alot of my off school time playing all of 'em. I was struck by a bolt of lighting, an idea, when the bridges came up. I remember as a kid I lived in a little town in Germany. Worms Germany. Check out their site http://WWW.worms.de.com the home page shows one of two bridge towers. Man that would be one hell of an bridge map.

Hi, yeah the map is great I liked it for the relism and the explosions.sounds...you must keep the explosions in and the map is a little to broad, I mean even with 20 players it seemed too big, and I get that from everyone, A great tdm map maybe just a little smaller, throw in some random mines in certain areas not just like the tripwires in areas where the map ends but in stategic locations like the explosions..

I would love to see someone do Berlin in the final days... Hitlers bunker, the arch thing, the building with the exploding nazi sign. No doors, no windows, no roofs--a totally distroyed city. We've all seen that city in dozens of movies.

tltrude is right, we need maps that most people know about from movies and that kind of stuff. I myself am making a realistic map of Pointe du Hoc. I guess I'm a realism freak or something, I've got an envy for this classical shit. You don't gotta make somethin historical, but I think it attracts more players to download your map.

I see your point. Realistic maps are fun.
The Thunder maps are desiged to give a player the wartime theme, plus giving each player a style or should i say, an area they like to go to.
keeping the range of all styles of play and weapons there advatages and dis-advantages.
The only thing I would say so far on the design of Thunder II, is the buildings look realistic.
An I am extremly adding a lot of detail.
I like eye candy.

Well the way you make the thunder maps is very good. It's kinda got everything in it. I would like another thunder but make some changes to it that doesn't look like the thunder format. For instance, you could move those neighborhoods around, maybe even rename your map "Flash," and make something with some flak cannons to destroy (that could be swell idea for your Band of Brothers TCM). The best thing I like about thunder is the detail and atmosphere of it.
Well, keep up the good work (lol, I read your resume, "mom, I want to be an air-conditioner person!", j/k, there's nothin wrong with that). biggrin:

Not assamed of doing Heating and Air. Just I have been doing it for 10 years now.
Im currently trying to change my job. Something in the Art field would be nice.

The theme will stay the same. Night, fog, and new added rain.
The objective I have planed out. So far no one has done it.
So it will give the community something new.

I'm probably going to join the Marine Corps, my alternative will most likely be something with computers, maybe cartography, graphics designer, IT administrator.
I just happened to live in Charlotte about two years ago. Taxes too damned high ed: . Also pretty dangerous neighborhood where my school was, quickshot: comegetsome: flamethrower: lol.

ok. i think rain would be VERY good for a new feture. some kind of weather effect to go along with the fog so that people can sneak around and not be seen so easyly. if this was a winter map, i would say make it snow so heavy that its hard to see. to add the REAL weather effect:)

and maybe puddles would b a cool plan. along with puddle walk-through sounds. umm....
some kind of underground stuff? maybe basements for the mantions, with secret tunles ataching to each of the mantions, but make them really hard to find...

hmm

a little more vegitation possibly? like alot of bushes. maybe sumhow make a grass texture/and mesh or w/e. so that its like in ghost recon and soldier of fortune2.. in fact sof2 uses the same 3d engine. if you could figure out how they got the grass in sof2 then you should do it, and put it in mohaa. in the hunder map. so people with camo can sneak around in the bush:)

umm, i really have alot of idea's. but they r all off topic with the thuinder map:( i want to see real time lighting (day/night cycle)
and a weather system, so maybe after a while it would be sunny. but then sum clouds roll in and it starts getting a little gloomy, and then lightning starts and sheeting of rain jus start pooring down. then get lighter after a while or sumthing.... then u could also put area's on the map to be animated so u could put in a snow weather effect. and make it so snow comes as well, and those area's on the maps would animat wen the snow starts and it would show areas of snow build up on the ground...

i dunno, these r just SUM ideas:) i dont think u have the will to do ALL that thow, lol :( *cries* lol

well, gimme your thoughts of what i have said guys

Yea, I like the idea of the weather changing, but I dont think it could be done. well not at the moment.
The rain by default does stop for a short time and then starts back up.

The high weeds and brush is in MOH/AA now.
I might add it too areas, but main issue is you cant laydown like you can in other games.
Hoping they add it to the expansion.

The map has begun development.
And is comming along very nicely.
Im going to wait to maybe this weekend before I tell the general layout and what the map feature will have.
Screenshots will also be posted.
There will be some new added features in the map.
They will be secret till the day of release.
