Am I screwed?

Over the past few weeks, my computer has been freezing up a lot. I think my HD is fried, but I'm not sure. When it freezes up, there is a whirring noise coming from the inside of the comp. If it is the HD, I'm screwed, because I can't copy all the crap that I have on there, because it will freeze up before it will finish burning the info on the CD. I'm not talking about MOHAA, that's easy to install. What happens if I have to take it in and wait 2-3 weeks before they change the HD?

can you put it on an FTP?

Its a wirring noise, right? Not a long beep?

Whirring noise = FAN.

VERY possible...

It stops functioning properly, your processor overheats and locks up the
computer. Happens to a lot of overclockers man. Open your case and see
if you can pinpoint the location of the noise...

Fans don't cost a lot...

Yeah I know, but the last time my fans went out, my comp would turn itself off to avoid catching on fire. That's not happening this time.

In this case, open your box and take out the hard drive. Next, you will hook
it up in an other person's computer as SLAVE and together will burn your shit
to cd. Then, you'll take your friend's HDD and put it in your pc: if it does the
same thing, congrats, it was the hard drive. If, however, it isn't, start changn
fans boy !

biggrin:

Well when it freezes up, the whirring noise is coming from the back of the mid-tower case, which is where the fans are located, but both fans seem to be running just the same as normal. If I wait just a minute or so the whirring stops, but the comp is still frozen.

why would you bring your comp in to have a hard drive put in. it takes 10mn and a 10 year old could do it. :) and they are cheap now days

So, the question stands, shoudl I reformat the HD? The only problem with that is I have some VERY large files that will not fit on one CD. How do I burn if the info selected will take up more than one CD?

Um, are you aware that you can transfer files from one HD to another?!?!

Just get some cheapo HD (used maybe) to act as a data holder while you figure out what the problem is with your current HD. Also, this could be a power supply problem! You could try unplugging all un-essential devices then seeing if the problem goes away, or just buy a new PSU (you can always re-use it in your next system, probably)
