my server shows high ping, but doesnt lag

i run a server on a cable connection. i set the sv_maxrate command to improve performance (thanx to this forum) wink: . now i can handle 10-12 people no problem. even guys playing with 300-400 ping dont lag my server.

the problem is when people lookup my server on gamespy it shows anywhere from 250 to 500 ping, causing a severe lack in popularity. nobody joins a server with 500 ping.

other nearby cable servers show a ping of 30-70, when i join them my ping is normal, 30-70. i don't think it's my connection.

ive tried dedicated and non, both show high ping but play lag free, even when full.

sv_maxclients 12
sv_maxrate 4800

is there another setting i have to adjust or something?

please help, i can't get my clan off the ground if nobody joins my server!

You probably have a connection problem somewhere. Do some tests using tracert command. You will need an IP or hostname to use tracert, get the IP of your ISP. Open a dos prompt and type tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (use your ISP's IP). Heres one I did for a guy yesterday:
Tracing route to dsl-216-227-90-165.telocity.com [216.227.90.165]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <10 ms 10 ms <10 ms 192.168.144.254

2 10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.145.2

3 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 65.105.194.177

4 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms 65.105.194.225

5 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms ge5-0-0.MAR1.SanDiego-CA.us.xo.net [207.88.81.113]

6 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms p5-2-0-1.RAR1.LA-CA.us.xo.net [65.106.5.37]

Trace complete.

Each line represents one "hop", its a router somewhere along teh line back to your destination. It pings each hop 3 times. As long as the pings are less than about 50 youre ok, once they get about 100, theres a problem. Once youve done some tests, if teh trouble persists, notify your ISP and give them the info on teh offending hop. Note- in the example above the 10th hop has a problem. All hops after this will appear "bad" also, teh first bad ping is usually the offender.
Routes to various IP addresses are different just as you dont always drive the same highway to 2 different places. You can have good pings to one server and bad pings to another.
If GSpy is showing your server with a high ping I would find their IP they use for their data server and ping it.

I think it IS your connection. I'm sorry, but MOH is not intended for large MP games on a Cable connection. You shouldn't host more than 8 people. Try lowering the amount of people, and see if your connection improves.

Yea good point Joe, I forgot he said "cable" connection.
You probably need to check your upload speed and make sure it will handle your setup. Check out my replies in this post:
http://www.alliedassault.com/phpBB2/vie ... highlight=
You will only be able to handle about 6 players on cable/dsl.

turns out it was that my "use proxy server" setting was turned off.
it increased my download speed by 150-200k! biggrin:

guess it worked for my upload speed too cause my server shows a ping of 90 now, that's a dedicated server set at 12 people at 4800 maxrate, and i also had my messenger runing too.

im gonna try tweeking it a little like 10 guys at 4000 maxrate. should i stay away from using a dedicated server with cable?
i also use the same pc to run the server and play on.

i read the maxrate is figured out by max.upload speed x # of players = maxrate. is that right, wrong?

my tracert showed me 4 hops with the ping never over 25. guess that'll change throughout the day but it looks like everything is fine.

thanx for the help, its much appreciated, cya! fire2:

Ok first step make sure you actually MEASURE your UPLOAD speed, http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/fut.html . Check it a few different times because it will change thruout the day, and use the average.
Now to find the Maxrate : take your upload measurement and divide by 8, now divide that amount by # players and thats your maxRate.
MaxRate = (Upload speed/8) / #players.
The maths always tricky, lol.

cool, it's all good now, thanks for all your help!

P.S. everyone i've told loves that tracert command!
