ATI Vs Nvidia

I'm getting a new ATI Radeon 9000 128mb DDR to replace my faulty Nvidia Geforce4 Mx440 pretty soon. Is this a good idea? I've never owned an ATI graphics card before, and i'd like to know everyones opinion on ATI before i go and fork out the cash for this card.

well in my opinion i would definately go with a Nvidia card. ATI is known for there driver problems and compatability issues. not to mention i believe Nvidia is a little more user friendly when it comes to changing the card details and overclocking, etc. i had a GeForce 2 MX 100/200 and just last week upgraded to a Gainward GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB card for just $160 on http://www.newegg.com. this card made all the difference in the world. i love it and ive not had a single problem whatsoever. in my opinion its perfect for MOHAA and i really see no reason to upgrade again at the moment. my good friend has the exact card you are wanting to purchase and he is having massive problems with it. the ATI Radeon 9000 is very similar to the ti4200. the only way i would purchase a ATI card is if i was going for the 9700 Pro which is like $350+. that card is the most powerful one out there, even more powerful than the ti4600.....but if you want a great solid card where you can't be the price and reliability, id say go for the ti4200 any day of the week. and you also cant go wrong on the brands, they are all great.

well i hope this helps. biggrin: if you need any more input just post reply on the thread and ill get back at ya again.

btw, did you want a 64MB or a 128MB card

in any case, i seriously suggest buying a card online as its much cheaper than getting it retail at some mainstream store.......www.newegg.com has got the hook-up big time and not to mention good delivery time and great service

I definately second the Nvidia recommendation. My G4 TI4600 works perfect.

ya any of the GeForce 4 ti series kick's ass. everyone i know that has one has no problems whatsoever.

Well it's a 128mb ddr card, but i'm not buying off the shelf, i'm getting it where i work ;) so it'll only cost me 90 bucks...i have my mind set on a 128mb card and all the nvidias are way too expensive even with the discount i get. Are you saying that MOH is incompatible with ATI? I sure hope not because MOH is the main reason i wanted to upgrade mad:

cRaZyDuCk 10-29-2002 01:05 PM

no ATI cards are compatible with MOHAA.....i was refering to compatability issue within your system. whether it be the version of windows or your motherboard. if you get that much of a discount then id prolly go with an ATI if your limited on cash but Nvidia own's in my opinion. maybe wait for some more responses before making a decision

Ok, i'll go with ATI then. i could always return it anyway so what's to loose :)

cRaZyDuCk 10-29-2002 01:09 PM

lol.....this is very true. good luck with the ATI and i hope that you dont have any problems. hope my two cents helped and see ya around

It sounds like your mind is made up already but here's my two cents anyway:

I had a PNY Vertego GF4 Ti4600 that worked flawlessly with Windows 98SE and MOHAA. After upgrading my OS to XP Home the card ceased to work. Old drivers, new drivers, beta drivers...didn't matter. I fiddled with it for three days and nothing worked.

Fed up, I bought the ATI R9700 Pro. It worked perfectly straight out of the box. I haven't had a single problem with it. I was surprised to learn it needed it's own connection to the power supply and the recommended minimum was 350W. My power supply is a 350W and it works great.

The ATI gave me a better MadOnion score by around 1,500 marks and jumped up my fps a little, too. I was playing MOHAA graphically maxed-out with the Ti4600 and still do with the R9700 so it didn't really help there.

If you plan to use the card for things other than straight gaming (TV out and such) I'd check the software they come with to be sure it will meet your needs. I've heard around the grapevine that ATI lacks in this department but I wouldn't know personally as I don't use the other functions.

Good luck and welcome to 128MB!

i've benn running MOHAA on an ATI card (64mb) for a year, and no issues so far, if it's cheap i'd go for it..

Cool, thanks for your opinions guys. I already went ahead and ordered the card :) Should arrive where i work in a matter of hours cool:

Another had a Ti4600 purchased a 9700 pro. did not see much of a difference in performance. I do miss Nvidia's driver support. Other then that I am happy with this card ...........

...............unit NV30 comes out. cry:
Sorry to say. anything will be better then the GF4 MX that's the only bad thing with nvidia, they flood the market with too many diff. cards.

Good luck with whatever card you get. You should see an improvement.

I can't speak for the card itself, but I do own an older ATI card and I can speak for their service dept.

5 or 6 years ago I bought an ATI ALL-IN-Wonder. It came with a rebate that was promptly mailed in along with a photocopy of the reciept. The rebate said expect 6 to 8 weeks to receive it. It took me EIGHT MONTHS, after 3 UNANSWERED emails, I phoned them, gave them a real peice of my mind and then finally they kept their word.

I hate to admit it, cuz I hate RADEON, but the newest RADEON, the RADEON 9700 Pro outperforms the Ti4600 GF4.
