Help! Low framrates even with my new geforce 4!
I have recently purchased a geforce 4 ti 4600 and to my surprise im getting a 20-40 fps in mohaa most of the time. Yes it will go to 50-90 but only in closed hallways and stuff. I have all the stuff on max but it should have a good fps for a geforce 4. What is wrong??? I have the latest drivers and everything.
I have 1ghz amd athlon 512 Ram geforce 4 ti 4600 |
I have the Radeon 9700 Pro and also get low fps in some maps. By low I mean below 20 once in a while. From what I've read in the past some game engines depend just as much on your CPU as they do your GPU. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Quake3 engine with it's particulate effects are CPU hogs. I have a lowly AMD Athlon 950Mhz (for now) and it has become my weakest link. Your 1Ghz chip may be causing your problem.
Anyone else out there have any ideas? |
Same here. Put in a Ti 4600 and I had almost no improvement in FPS. There are other improvements in other games but I also believe that some game engines devour the CPU.
You could always lower your resolution though, that should get your FPS up. |
What is wrong???
Your cpu. Your cpu is not for a g4ti4600. You need to have at least a 1.8ghz to use your g4 at is maximun. You are not taking the full potential of the card whit this slow cpu . Me too i did the same mistake as you. Now i have a 2ghz. whit ddr333 My graphics are not even set to the maximum whit this config because i need at least 50fps to be good. |

Ummm we all did same mistake .... Its useless to have a readeo 9700 whit a 950mhz cpu. I think its better havea 2ghz cpu whit a radeon 7500. |
My motherboard supports up to an AMD Athlon 1800+. Is that sufficient to get the maximum performance from my or holy_might's cards?
|
Support??? yea ok but what is your cpu?
Supported cpu is just an information.... you confuse me sorry i am a ==> oOo: |
I'd recommend a faster processor too but you definitely don't need one. Turn off VSync and your frame rates will shoot right up. My frame rates rarely drop below 90 with max everything and 4x AntiAliasing enabled.
|
check your drivers man. do you have the latest ones from http://www.nvidia.com? check that out and see if that helps

What is VSsync? |
try: Com_maxfps 300
lol or! Com_maxfps 5 |
thx for all ur help guys. But i have just a few more questions...
I was thinking of upgrading my processor anyways but i have a question about the vsync thing. Where do u find it? and where do u find the AntiAliasing thing? I may sound like a newb about this but u can only learn by asking questions. I also have a problem with fps in unreal2003 the demo, almost same low frames but i noticed a great increase in bf1942, i think it is my processor. Btw, i upgrading all my drivers for everything, i mean everything! I'm gonna get an amd athlon 2200+(1.8 ghz) and ill let u kno how it turns out. If theres no improved fps then its something wrong with the card. |

It'll give you a massive decrease in frame rates but your games will look much much better....you know how you always see the little jaggies on curved lines? Antialiasing blends colors around the stairsteps of the jaggies so that they appear to be smooth lines...the higher level of antialiasing you use the more of a frame rate decrease you will see. I use it because 90+ fps is more than enough to play on and the game looks so so so much better. Anyways, you can find options for antialiasing and vsync in your video settings..I don't know what OS you're using but you should know where your monitor settings are located (where you can change the resolution and color quality)...just go into there and click on advanced...it'll be in there but the exact location in there depends on what drivers you're using Can I make a recomendation? You said your mobo is good up to 1800+..so i'm assuming you're getting a new mobo? I wouldn't go with the athlon 2200+. ermm...do you know how amd differs from pentium? the athlon does 3 clock cycles for every 1 that a pentium does. You cannot compare the two processor brands directly against eachother as this would be like comparing apples to oranges. That's why AMD changed the way they name their processors...take the Athlon XP 2200+ that you want. It actually runs at 1.8Ghz but....it's just as fast as a pentium 2.2Ghz. hence the 2200+ portion of the name. If I were you I would spend the small amount of extra cash and get an Athlon XP 2800+...It runs at 2.25GHz but is the equivelant of a 2.8Ghz pentium. It's also the first AMD chip that runs with 333Mhz FSBwhich is a good good thing. you can find a good review of it below...although the only bad part is that it won't be ready for 2 more months or so...if you can wait that long. http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/02q4/021001/ a little long winded but i hope i helped at least a little. |
Yeah turn off v-sync. left click on your desktop and go into your video card properties, Its in there.
Im running a 1.1Ghz Celeron (heh heh) oOo: with a Geforce 3 Ti 200 and 512 megs of ram. I run MOH:AA at 1024x768 with most details at high some at med. My avg fps is 43fps but if theres alot going on, on the screen it does drop to the low 20s high teens, still playable. I'm also running nvidias newest beta drivers 40.76 i think it is. They work real well on most games. |
