Map Types - How come very few/no Wilderness maps?
Just wondering why there are so few 'outdoors' type maps? Like the Bocage country or hills or whatnot. Are Town maps just that much more fun to play or people are used to running around buildings, and thats what they know?
Also, has anyone noticed that 90% of the new Spearhead maps turn into Spawnkill frenzies? |
Ya a few of the new SH maps really suck. I can't believe EA just put their contest winner maps in there. How lazy is that, stupid... hake:

The contest winner maps are the best.
And Rommel, because that would kill fps. Outdoor maps are cool, but there'd be too much fog to keep a decent frame rate. ->Red |
but the reason why there arnt very many outdoors maps is because they take alot longer to make and there usually not as fun to play on. like i would say the original winter map for mohaa is one of the least liked maps.

Outdoor maps
As far as framerates go, the Snowy Park from original MOH is actually one of the faster maps out there. Not alot for the computer to draw. I think the reason why people don't like that map is they can't camp corners, and there are just to many ways to move through it. Not to belittle anyone, but the good majority (50-75%) of people are familar with one or two routes, and just can't handle having 4-5-6 routes to move through. I look at some of the maps out there, and there are quite a few good ones. I guess it breaks down to trying to make maps good for everything - sniping, stalking, rushing, etc. Favoring one of the other is what gives a bias towards a particular type. The only thing that really kills maps is the spawnkilling. I have to laugh at the _vast_ majority (85-95%) of people who sit and kill people as the pop up and think they are good. Anyway, long post over, but look for my new outdoor map soon ;)

It's funny that this should come up now. The map I am working on titled "Verlassene", has a few little 'wilderness' areas. Although not even close to the boring-hate to play-why'd they even make it-original MoHAA map. I think it has a nice balance between indoor and outdoor areas, and so far I've managed to keep the FPS over 70 (with some help from Vonderbakluft and Higherspeed). And it's 90+ indoors.
It is nothing like my first release. It has a true WWII atmosphere with a lot of surprises and some scripted events (again, thanks to Vonderbakluft) Look for it soon. And I totally agree with Rommel: There is nothing worse than getting picked off as soon as you spawn, before you even know where you are in the map! And it also stinks that most mappers don't put enough spawn points in their maps. Or they don't use spawnpoints that let the user use the map for team or dm. I better stop now-- I am not preaching--just disappointed in that I can't play some great maps in team. |

And it also stinks that most mappers don't put enough spawn points in their maps. Or they don't use spawnpoints that let the user use the map for team or dm. This is the number one single factor why you have spawnkills. Grouping the spawns in one area is easier - your map is much simpler to make and layout. My current map (well the one I plan to release public anyway) has 7-8 spawn areas for each side, with 5-6 spawn points in each spawn area. That way you might have someone sit and camp a single spawn point, but you've got 7 out of 8 chances you're in the wrong one. Makes for a longer learning curve of a map, but I think that gives you more playablitly, as well as a balancing factor of sides - you've got a general idea where the bad guys will come from, but not one particular spot you can sit on. |
Well if its a outdoor map for multi-player I can't help you, but I am working on an outdoor map single player. It starts out in the wilderness then you eventually find a bunker which leads down to underground corridors and rooms, lots of fun.

Snowy Park deserves Respect
I totaly agree with you there Rommel, I think Snowy Park is one of the most underestimated maps out there... It has nice fps and is perfect for teamplay, especially because of the little river that creates a really cool kinda front line. Its so sad that so many people dont even try that map out... Teamplay/Objective fans always play the same maps on their servers, wich is aboslutely boring after a while. I just dont understand: how could you ever like a teamplay Stalingrad better that a teamplay Snowy Park??!?!
Its problably because they cant feel like they are cool and play the role of 'cool sniper' like thay can in destroyed village and shit... |
Outdoor maps take shorter timeto make than many others

Re: Snowy and outdoor maps
I'd like to think I am pretty good, (both at playing and 'thinking' my way through a map). Snowy is disliked so much for the reasons mentioned above, also like you said, teamplay will just wreck the other side on that map. Most people (and this is not a shot at anyone mind you) don't grasp more than run shoot die aspect of FPS - the 'sneaky' ones camp/snipe. I've gone 31-5 with a bolt action rifle with a buddy of mine, working together. There is tooo many places to move around, and like I posted earlier, you have to watch all sides for bad guys coming in. And to mention my post earlier, it is pretty easy to spawn camp that map too. My new map, which should be done mid-late december, is outdoors, with a couple of burnt out buildings (3) to break up hills/vehicles/terrain etc. I'll post a couple of screens when I get comfortable with how it looks - I still can't decide on the sky.
