Episode 2 : "Gordon's Will" - Changi 'Gundagai'
 

Changi was a fictional Australian Drama/Situational-Type Comedy, set in the WW2 Japanese POW camp of, you guessed it, Changi... It was a wonderful show, and I was just crusin' it's Website, and found it had their version of 'Road to Gundagai" on it, so I thought it had some relevance to WW2, so here it is...

Episode 2 was about Gordon's refusal to salute the Nip Officer named "Lt Aso - Lt Arsehole", so the Japs made him stand on a box in the scorching sun until he would salute, he didn't, so they beat him horribly, he still didn't salute, so they cut one of his toes off, still he wouldn't salute, infact, it was only until they threatened to shoot his friends that he finally gave in. Oh man, I'm feeling all jittery thinking about it, I'll go watch it now...

Not to go to OT but where does the word "bloke" come from? I know it kind of means "fellow" or refers to a male acquaintance. Is it short for something? Just curious! Thanks. cool:

Only in Aussie "situational" comedy will a guy getting tortured and his toe cut off seem "funny".

Don't worry, Von Paulus, i also saw the series when it was on TV, and plan to get the DVD for Christmas. It's one of those shows that really shows the value of the Australian sense of humour in dire situations. It's probably a waste of time trying to explain it to anyone else. Few people from other nations would appreciate it.

For the record, the idea of the show was to show how friendship and a sense of humour can get people through really shitty situations, such as a hellish Jap POW Camp.

Thanks for the kind words man, It's good to see people on this forum with whom it's possible to have an intellectual conversation... There hasn't been a dickhead Australian around here from what I've seen... Maybe that says something about the difference between the US and Australia as Ball Wook said...

And to Ed: My suggestion that Changi was a situational comedy, should not be taken out of the boundaries of it's dramatic, violent content. Australian POW's, hell, Australians in general, respond to adverse conditions and harsh treatment with humour. Perhaps the humour we use may not be as subtle in nature and degrading as the form you use to destroy the self minds of the other forum members, but we try our best... oOo:

Hmm, I think it was on around the middle of last year Trip, I remember because for me it was like an appetiser for Band of Brothers... But then Band of Brothers was delayed for a year...
