ip problem (i think)

when i create a server my ip is 192.168.0.2. i wait aout half an hour with my name 'Clan Recruiting - Get Ranks' i thougt it would have got peopel in. but it did not.. my dad said people can not join cause my internet connection is networked. (a laptop starts my internet connection and it is networked to my computer) is there any way to create a server that peolple can join and that i have rcon rights?

please help me! thanks alot!

well first off 192.168.0.2 is a network IP. 192.168 is always for the network (or 0.0.0 something there are others) 0.2 is your computer, that means it is #2 on the network hub.

To find out your IP Address for your system there are 2 ways to do this.

First if you have windows 98-ME go to start/run on your desktop and type winipcfg in the run prompt. A window will appear and show your IP, you may have to switch between gateways for your IP (the drop down menu) One is your network one is for your modem.

For Windows XP go to start/programs/Accessories/Command Prompt. On your desktop.

*This is not a dos prompt, it is a similar prompt that does the samething as dos, windows XP does not run on DOS.*

type ipconfig into the black box, and you will see a list of IP addresses.
IP Address:------------------------Is your REAL IP ADDRESS for the computer your on not for the network.
Subnet Mask: dont worry about that
Default Gateway: Same as your IP Address

If you have your network enabled ( I dont at the time) you will have network IP addresses that look like
192.168.0.2

So to get people to play on your server, you must first get your IP address, then tell it to people.

Also just FYI, Ive never hosted on a network before, you might not be able to seeing the connection is coming off the other computer, You might need to host the server on the host computer, not sure seeing Ive never tried, my PC is host computer heh.

Hope that helps.

What he said, but I think it might actually be a router. You may not have the proper ports open for your router.

Check here:

http://mohadmin.com/nuke/modules.php?na ... age&pid=13

Follow this tutorial for the proper way to open ports on your router.

You can also goto http://www.whatismyipaddress.com to see what your ip is.

thats not funny.
IP from that website differs to both my internal and external IPs as per ipconfig..... which in turn is not behind a NAT device and not on an ISP which blocks ports and not effected by a firewall yet i cannot host a server on any of these.

if youre more knowledgeable than other people maybe you can tell me where my problem is ? rudedog had a crack but no solution... maybe you can ?

Explain it to me in a PM I might be able to help.

no PMs.... nobody else can read it.

Can start and run a dedicated server and can confirm its running via autokick. Server is not accessable for external clients though.... timeouts.... no response.... pretty much no server.

Usual suspects in this order...... [1] using wrong IP [2] NAT device (ie need to map ports in router) [3] firewall interference [4] ISP port blocking.

[1] http://www.whatismyip.com returns my ISPs web proxy IP (ie not mine). ipconfig returns 198.*.*.* internal IP and 150.*.*.* which is my external IP confirmed via lookup which resolves to my ISPs netblock.... ie they own that address. Used 150.*.*.* as IP for clients to connect to without success. local autokick runs fine when pointed to the internal network address 198.*.*.*

[2] ADSL modem does not use NAT nor does my firewall..... therefore if my server runs on port 12203 then giving a client the address 150.*.*.*:12203 this should work fine.

[3] Firewall not an issue as tried with firewall configs including disabled.

[4] ISP does not block ports and permits any type of server to be run.

R3mix--Can you play the game on the lan? If so, you have a problem with firewall, port forwards or both.
What is your firewall, OS, and how is your connection shared?

Come over to mohadmin.com and check it out, lots of help there.

I run Win2K and do not run ICS/LAN. I have NIC card only because it is required for my ADSL modem.

Like I said there is no need for port forwarding since there is no NAT device. Port forwarding is only required where packets sent from external clients to your external port 12203 are routed to a random port by a NAT device. Neither my ADSL modem nor my firewall use NAT therefore connection attempts to my server from the internet to port 12203 go nowhere other than 12203. ie.... port forwarding is not the solution.

Likewise as i said the firewall has been tested with allow-all settings to rule it out.

I know there is lots of info at mohadmin but unless you know of a specific resource there that relates to this then that website is not a solution to my problem and suggesting it is just as pointless as the rest of this.

Now I wrote what i did in my previous post and listed all these usual problems because I have been through this shit before and it bores the fuck out of me to get the sam advice again that has already failed.
So I wrote these down in detail to point out that these are not issues with my system. Now your suggestion is that port forwarding or a firewall may be the issue. Huh ?

Like I did 6 months ago I think ill drop it and just not try to host. I seem to have a reoccuring problem where people cannot contribute other than regurgitating what they read in a previous thread. Ive got a search function for these forums same as everyone else.

Ok my problem I think is the same as his. I have two IP addresses. One is for the Network bridge(which is the 192.168 one) and one is my pcs actual IP. How do I tell MOH to use my PCS IP address? Or any other games for that matter. Its not a router just DSL shared via a hub.

rudedog 12-13-2002 09:10 AM

Lets run this down

you have a computer with a private IP address
you have a modem with a public address

you try to host your server from the computer with the private address thus, this is the ip address seem from your MOH console ( private IP )

This will work for any out bound traffic. as your modem, bridge, router or whatever is sitting between you and the outside world. It will open any ports requested from behind the device ( this device trusts all outbound traffic)

If you try hosting a moh server. the server is going to broadcast it's ip address (which is private) to the master server (gamespy). You still need to tell the device which has a public IP address to pass any packets back to the private IP address which is running the server.

Even if you have open traffic Network address translation (NAT) is happening here.

I personally have never used a xDSL modem so I do not know how they work. I do know some of them need to dial the ISP every time they connect. You can keep this connection alive with a router or other keep alive device.

With my cable, my box sits right on the net but my box has a public IP address. so if I host the master server sees my public ip and i have no problem . For some reason your getting a private ip address which can not be seen from the outside world.

I would recommend you stopping my dslreports.com and asking someone with a dsl modem. They will be able to help you much faster then any of us non dsl modem members.

please, keep all info in this thread as PMs dont help others out.
