Multiplayer lag?

Hey, need some help here. I have been playing Moh multiplayer
for a long time. I have usually had one of the best "pings" on any server
I have played on. About a month ago that all changed. I have done nothing to my PC at all, and one day my pings all of the sudden are up in the 100-300's! Like I said, I didn't change anything on my PC, just doesn't work on moh MP worth a crap! As far as the internet goes, works great! Quick as hell. File transfers on Kazaa™ etc., works fine. Just the servers
are slow as hell. DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! I keep getting kicked on
every server I'm on! PLEASE, some suggestions would greatly be appreciated! THANK YOU! cry:

Oh, I'm running XP home with a cable connection. Usually
around 1.5Mbps upload speed on normal internet.

I cant point to anything specific, but it could just be fluctuations in the way you are being routed in order to connect to a game. I had a 2-3 week period earlier this year where I had a similar response. Eventually it went back to normal.

I know its not much immediate help.

Does your provider have a download limit? You mau have gotten over that, and they slowed you down or something gay like that. I dont really know what they do when this happens because i have a 40gb d/l limit per MONTH. So, i dunno... That could be the reason.

Drew 12-17-2002 02:34 AM

Using a cable connection maybe?

Most cable providers have more d/l bandwidth than you would normally use in a given day, but most of them also have a serious problem with upload bandwidth. In some cases I have heard of 1.5mb down/30kb up. Yes, it can get that bad. Depends if a lot of people near you have cable.

I have cable, and its all sweet... Its just your provider usually.

If you tend to play on the same servers all the time (like I do) run a tracert to those servers to see if the problem lies with your ISP.

To do that in XP Home: Start - Command Prompt - type the following

[code:5c5e2]tracert ###.###.###.###[/code:5c5e2]

where ### is the IP of the server you're checking. You should get something similar to this:

In my case I have an unusual amount of Request timed out but I still ping around 50 on that server. Good luck!!

OK,a friend and I were discussing this EXACT same problem. I think if you use either A) a router, B) Kazaa, or C) Both, it will cause immense amounts of lag in your game.

Ask the guys from AAN.NET, whenever I play, 5 minutes in the game my lag shoots to hell. I turn of Kazaa, and everything is fine. It's only done this since I installed V2.11 patch for SH. Like I said, I have a Linksys BFR141 Router (4-port Cable/DSL, built-in switch/firewall). I dun't want to unplug it all to test this, but I think Kazaa causes a conflict.

Bane 12-17-2002 10:43 AM

Is Kazaa really causing a conflict? It's using a bunch of your bandwidth and system resources, that's for sure. That would cause lag...

Maybe its your computer holding too much data when i got bf1942 it lagged the hell out of Mohaa for some reason then i uninstalled it now it works fine. so try uninstalling a couple of things u dont want.

Make sure you do a tracert to determine if it is a downed hop that is causing your lag. This is the most likely suspect, as Bane suggested. If the pings look normal, then determine if you are running programs that would take up your bandwidth, like Joe suggested. This is the second likely suspect. The upload on cable is always a round 30KB/s, no matter what service you have or how many people share your connection. DL speed is the amount that varies (from 100K-1.5MB/ps). The upload will have nothing to do with you connecting to the server, only if you yourself are hosting a server (FTP or Game).

Now that is the opposite of what I have always heard. I thought that you lag most likely came from poor upload capabilities. I can have downloads going on my second pc that dont hurt my ping a bit, but if their are uploads going it trashes my ping. Lag is slow (two-way) communication with the server. Your upload has much less tolerance for interfenece due to its already small capacity. If your pc cant tell the server what you are doing, it cant tell you what everyone else is doing in relation - hence lag. Some one comes around a corner, you pull the trigger and nothing, you die. The server was able to tell you someone was there, you werent able to communicate that you had pulled the trigger before the guy that didnt have lag due to upload latency.

Now, I might be wrong, but that has always been my understanding.

Druid 12-17-2002 02:13 PM

As someone mentioned it's a good idea to do a tracert to the server to rule out network problems between you and the server. The problems is it won't necessarily show if there is a problem if it's only done once or a few times.
The best way to check for spikes which would show as lag is to use a ping program set to run dozens of times.
You can get a nice free one here
[url:c636e]http://www.pingplotter.com/downloads/pngplt_1.exe[/url:c636e]
Set it to run 50 times and it will show any wild spikes at each hop. It will also show if you suffer from any packet loss.

It always makes me laugh when I see someone complain about the server being laggy. Unless everyone is having a problem, more than likely the problem is on your end or your route to the server and not the server its self.
