Port Questions

I recently bought a SMC Barricade for my cable connection. I instantly had problems using the in game browser. It would hang and connecting to a game was a nightmare, always timing out. I did the usual, updated firmware, opened ports 12203-12206 and 12300, and a tech support call. Still nothing. I thought maybe the router was whacked so I setup my old PC with Mandrake SNF firewall and BOOM, same thing but now the game list won't even populate at all! I've done everything but allow all ports to pass, which I can not do. Am I missing something? I'm obviously connecting to the net ok and everything else works good. I have the same problem on multiple PC's so I'm sure it's the firewall. Any suggestions?? TIA

I just found this....maybe it'll help you.

[QuickList:

1) Collect IP Information

2) Configure Port Blocking/Forwarding on your Firewall

Overview:
Firewalls and Routers are restrictive by design, and have to be setup to allow the MoHAA/GameSpy traffic to reach your server or GameSpy/ASE. In some cases this is done by allowing traffic thru a Port Blocking filter and/or directing it to a specific IP Address using Port Forwarding.

Instructions:
Unfortunately I cannot give specific instructions that would cover every program out there, but I can give some general info to get you going. The most common situations seem to be broadband internet routers and personal firewalls such as Black Ice Defender or Norton. Both of these use port blocking, and personal firewalls can often be changed on the fly to a "low" setting. You'll most likely be using a web based interface for a router, and will have to enter in the actual port numbers to unblock. Less commonly seen is Port Forwarding, which is usually found in the more intelligent routers and dedicated firewall machines, like a Linux box. Oftentimes the game server will be on a network segement that has special security to protect the rest of your network while making it easy for Internet users to access the server. This is known as the DMZ or De-Militarized Zone, since it represents a border or buffer zone between your protected machines and the wilds of the 'net.

I have collected the information on the following table from various websites and documents on MoHAA and GameSpy. I recommend use of the ports in bold, and I have used 192.168.0.2 as an example of the Game Server's IP Address.

(note this is a nice table on my website but this msg board doesn't like tables very much)

Items in BOLD are required to run a server, everything else is for GameSpy/ASE clients.

Dogmeats guide is very good at giving you the info to open your ports.

personally I am not familiar with your router. Most routers just block incoming traffic. This is fine if your just playing MP. The connection and ports are being initiated from behind the router thus should work without opening any ports.

some routers block both incoming and outgoing ports. thus you need to open the outgoing ports as well. Use dogmeats guide to open the correct ports.

If your trying to host a game from behind your router, then make sure both outgoing and incoming ports are open/forwarded.

Your best bet is to find a message board for your router. I bet you will get a better answer with someone familiar with your router.

Good luck and let us know how you make out

That is good advice, I might look at a different forum. But my rules are setup as follows. Allow all out going UDP TCP, and Allow 12201-12210, 12300, etc incoming. Still no go. I'll find a SNF forum. Thanks for all the help.

I'm guessing the Barricade is a firewall/router?
