performance question
 

Hey guys. I just put a new processor in my computer and have had some trouble playing mohaa since then. After playing a game for about 20 minutes or so my computer completely freezes up and I have to reboot. Spearhead gave me the same thing. Could my processor be overheating somehow? How can I check that? I didn't have this problem with my old one installed. I updated my video drivers and it didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Did you set the jumpers correctly for your new CPU?

Don't ever trust a jumperless Motherboard. Go into the Bois and make sure your running at the correct frequencies. Also check all CPU voltages.

what the board is it an asus?

i had that same problem with MOHAA and it was due to overheating. i have an athlon 1.3gh chip and it kept overheating so i went into bios and knocked the cpu speed down to 1gh and it has never happened again. maybe ill boost it back back up when i buy another fan or two to cool it.

Meh, another thing I didn't know! I always trusted Jumperless! biggrin: Anyways, this sounds logical. Hopefully, your mobo supports your processor's top speeds too. Maybe you should consider flashing the BIOS.

Sounds like you are getting some instability under load. I would monitor your temps. Hopefully your motherboard supports it. Did you buy a retail processor/fan combo or did you put your old heatsink/fan combo on the new processor. Cooling is extremely important. I just found out that my intake case fan is mounted against a solid wall. Not good for the overclocking I am working on. So far I have an xp2200 up to 1.919 ghz - ~xp2400 speed. With better airflow, I will be able to crank it up a good bit more (without crazy fan noise). Time to break out some power tools and drill some holes. evil:

Hey guys. I think it's definately a CPU issue. I do have the heatsink that came with the processor installed and my bios settings are what they should be set at (i'm running at 2 GhZ like I should be). Here's something to consider: When I first installed my cpu and heatsink I booted up once. I had some problems soon after and removed my heatsink from the cpu, thus breaking the bond between the two. In putting it back on, there was only a little bit of that heatsink grease left on the CPU and it might not have been enough to keep it properly cooled. I've been worried about it since then because it is still like that. Do you guys think this is my problem?

Could be. From reading your first post, it sounded like overheating to me.
