this is really dumb

ok I cant believe I am asking this but how would I reformat my HD (i am currently running windows ME) and then install win2k on the freshly reformatted HD? articles? i cant seem to find them, pardon me I am a geezer

1) Backup everything, obviously

2) insert the W2K CD, and reboot.

3) Access BIOS and change the boot order so that CD-ROM is read 1st, HD 2nd, Floppy 3rd (Any others put after floppy), reboot

4) The disc should load. From there, choose to make a new install of W2K

5) It will ask you what partition you want to install on. If you have more than 1 partition, delete the others, as W2K should be in NTFS format, not FAT32 like WinME. (NTFS is better & faster)

6) Once all partitions are gone, install W2K on the default C:/. Choose to format the drive, then it will install the OS.

7) Once finished, change the boot order back to Floppy 1st, CD 2nd, HD 3rd (Or whatever it was prior to you changing it)

ok thanks, I kinda did that, I installed directly from the win2k CD ROM and formatted to an NTFS. well I thought everything would be fine but for some reason it did not format. argh how do I format win2k and then do a clean install!!! everything is still here

Old Reliable 01-26-2003 11:00 PM

ok how do I access my bios

Bazooka_Joe 01-26-2003 11:13 PM

It's different on all systems. Usually you press delete right when you turn the PC on and see it loading your HD/CD ROM, might be F8, F10, F2, depends.

Old Reliable 01-26-2003 11:38 PM

dammit i always fuck this up and its like -10 in my house fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

Bazooka_Joe 01-27-2003 12:07 AM

I dunt know why you aren't able to do it with the W2K CD. I was able to. It's right before it installs the OS, it asks you if you want to format the drive. Your other option is to get into DOS and just do:

[code:d49db]format C:/[/code:d49db]
