Tech help: Cd rom drives missing?
Hey,
Im somewhat of a computer genius, but this has got me stumped. My 2 cd drives arent showing up on the computer. You put something in one, and it starts spinning, but no autoplay. There is no drive letter assigned to either of them, as you cant see them when you go into windows explorer. In the bios, I tried enabling/user settings/auto/disabling them, to no avail. If secondary master/slave is set to cd-rom, it says secondary slave failed. I replaced the cable theyre both on. (had a spare lying around, brand new cable) Uh.. find new hardware didnt find anything. I havnt installed anything lately... I dont think. No virus's found on my system. Im out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Rayn |
IVE SEEN THAT BEFORE
that happened to me a long time ago. had to end up reformatting the computer to get them back.a reformat will bring them back. as for why they left..i still dont know.i reformat about every 6 months or so just to keep things sharp. a reformat should not be a problem for you.

what os are u using?
i had this similiar problem before. what i did was start/control panel/system/hardware/device manager/dvd/cd-rom drives i right clicked on cd drives and removed the drives under properties. then i rebooted and windows picked them up. if you are using xp it is possible to do a system restore to a point where your drives worked properly. hope this helps. |
My mom absolutely hates having the computer reformatted. Ive done it more than once before angel:
Any OTHER suggestions besides reformatting would be good. Reformatting is a last restort sorta option. |
EDIT BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anywho, I forgot. 98se. |
You might want to try to update your chipsets firmware, or flash your BIOS. This may fix the issue.

Noooooooooooo! Not the off topic board!
Theyll eat my brains! Or, perhaps just get into a flaming war, forgetting the question and not helping me in teh least. |

*sigh*
Ok, reinstalled some drivers I found. The comp now recognizes the cd drives. When right clicked, it says: No SCSI host adapter found. Its not a SCSI drive. It says this untill I click ok three times. Then I get my right click menu. If I auto play, on say, BF1942, the menu comes up, but each button, isntead of being a graphic, says like BUTTON_PLAY , or BUTTON_EXIT or BUTTON_INSTALL at the bottom it says EA_BANNER or something like that. Funky. Way. I cant find either drive in device manager to disable, or reinstall drivers. Plextor is closed, so I cant call them untill tomorrow, and I want it today. ANybody had this happen before? |
Try adding hardware...
And I would like your brains with a side of fries please. |

swordfight: Easiest thing to do is go to Device Manager, right click on each CD drive you are missing and remove them. Reboot and let Windows pick them back up. You may be asked to put your install CD in for Windows to find the drivers or get the drivers from the internet.
