keeping maps in main/slow gameing?
i've heard if i keep all my map files in my main that this can slow performance because the files are constantly being read, is this true and if so how can i set it up so i can retreive the maps for quick access? thanks for the replies and to hell with anyone who flames me

I'm almost 100% certain that keeping your pk3 map files in your main folder will not slow your performance, as all of your map files are kept there, even the original stock ones (Algiers, Crossroads, etc).
Map files (or bsp files) are only read at the initiation of the level. The only part of a map file cluster that is read during play is the script file and this won't slow play down whatsoever. |
My guess is starting MoHAA will slow down.
If you do not have a lot of RAM, performance might drop. Because Windows will start using the relatively slow virtual memory on your harddrive if it runs out of RAM. |
Edit:
But I am not sure. I don't know if MoHAA loads all (unused) .pk3's into the memory. I think not. |

Perhaps I have misunderstood it but he's asking if having lots of maps loaded into your main folder will slow MoH down during play? The answer is no, so far as I can fathom. The pk3 files are all accessed as MoH starts, but they are not loaded into RAM until the map is accessed via a game. If you have low RAM this will surely affect performance and also will slow loading times (MoH remembers a lot of info if you have a lot of RAM, even after you close MoH, until it's over-written by another program). But having lots of maps loaded shouldn't slow gameplay down at all (unless you have filled your Hard Drive up too much with them, in which case it might impact Virtual Memory Access). |

As I said, I think not (loading maps in memory while sytarting MoHAA). So I think we are in perfect agreement, eatthis: |
Ah, I thought that's what you meant :)
Yeh, I very much doubt 2015 would be so bad at game designing to have forced their game to load all current pk3 information into resident RAM memory before you've even started a game up. If they did then you'd effectively have around 1 Gig of info trying to be forced into your RAM, which would surely not work on most machines :) I'd imagine it works like just about every other PC game out there and only loads what is needed into RAM then discards it when it's no longer needed (only saving info in a cache that can be re-used if the PC has enough RAM to support this). |
As they said, the .PK3 files are only read at certian times; When you first boot MOH, when you load any map, and when an admin preforms a dumpuser on you. Other than that, they just reside in your folder.
