WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER "OFFTOPIC"

No offense, but it seems some folks have better opinions of OFFTOPIC than the rest of us. Normally that would be cool...but these people seem to be in control of the "button".

So the question is then...what do YOU consider OFFTOPIC. I mean the basic definition is ANYTHING that doesn't fit into any OTHER forum, and that doesn't violate FORUM RULES.

Problem is - you get a bunch of legitimate "BULLSHIT" labeled as spam, and we get mass lockage. Yet the UMPTEENTH "chex out my l337 puter" thread lives on. Right.

So...

OFFTOPIC...what is it? Let the world know.

And Founding_Tree....nice.

There's a difference in Offtopic and Spam, Ed.

ninty 04-01-2003 01:06 AM

oh ed how i missed you.

i love you like an adopted computer internet son...or something to that extent.

Anywho, last time I checked offtopic stuff was for things that were offtopic, which retty much includes evrything except for the things that are ontopic, which would be MOH. So anything not MOH would be considered offtopic in my view.

Said it once and I'll say it again - who has DETERMINED what SPAM is. The reason people get pissed, is because threads they take the time to start, for WHATEVER reason - someone decides its SPAM in the lexicon of knowledge of all things "INTERNET".

And Ninty...stop coming on to me.

If you've read the rules recently, you will see that BadScript decided what spam is.

[quote:bc754]( 6 ). NO SPAM.

By spam, we mean this... *(Graciously ripped from Dodd's set of Rules
in General Discussion Forum)

If you’re a new guy/girl to forums, here’s a crash course on spam.

There's several ways you can spam a forum. Most people just do it to gain post
count and annoy the hell out of people.

a) When you post several times in a row. Anything above 2 posts in a row is
already pushing it. You can easily use the "edit" feature on your post and add
more of what you want to say.

b) Going "off-topic". This means when a thread is talking about a particular
issue and then someone comes up and posts something that is totally irrelevant
and has nothing to do with the issue at hand. (Refer to rule number (5).)

c) When a person makes a topic that makes no sense at all.

d) When someone makes a topic or posts to reach a certain post count.
Ex: joe has 90 posts. He makes a topic and posts spam just to reach 100.
If someone makes a topic like that, it will be closed immediately and that
person will be warned not to do it again, (EDIT:BW.) If you persist you will
be banned, no more warnings.)[/quote:bc754]

There is nothing in there that gives a CLEAR and definable CONTENT restriction on what is considered spam.

Which AGAIN, is the problems.

If I put up a thread containing "ed's greatest hits" - how in goods name does that A) Not make sense, B) Go to increase my post count (one aint a whole lotta difference), or C) go anywhere "off-topic" since I start my own thread.

Is it a lil "foo-foo" - perhaps. But to insert one of your patented "smarmy-ass-not-making-you-any-more-friends-than-you-already-DONT-have" - well I would consider that SPAMMING, THREAD-HIJACKING, and just DIRTY POOL. But please, let's let this be a forum where we can discuss the issues of SPAMMAGE and what some folks seem to have a problem with.

I'm not home right now but I WILL tackle this tonight...

I will try and find a definition everyone can agree with. Ouch, I have my
work cut out for me!

when someone like ninty9 comes along to say hello, and is all but told to fuck off by a mod
(who knows him well) and has his thread locked for what seemed like a reason of semantics...
then, off-topic or not, that is just plain rudeness and bullshit.

Ed, you ain't gonna make the debate team like this.

Whether "Ed's Greatest hits" is spam or not depends on what the message is. If "ed's greatest hits" is all that the thread is all about, without any explanation whatsoever, then of course it won't make any sense to normal users.

But if you follow the subject "Ed's Greatest hits" with, for example, a bunch of screenies showing off your greatest gaming moments in Pong, then I suppose none of us could accuse you of A) Not making any sense, B) posting in the sole purpose of increasing your post count, or C) go anywhere "off-topic".

Our rules are written for members that are over 13 years old, and I'm not saying this to diss you; there's a button that asks you whether you are below or over 13 when you register, and I tend to not activiate users that are below 13.

Then again, I guess they coulda just click on the other button, right Ed? eek:

Any more questions?

to address the issue, politician style, that is.... eek:
