Geography question about Austria
 

Does anyone know what state Dzuryn is in? I'm trying to do some genealogy work and i've traced my way to the town of Dzuryn in Austria. If anyone here is from Austria, i'd be interested in talking with you.

I did a search for Dzuryn Austria and came up with nothing

where did yo find out about this? how positive are you about it being in austria?

some people like to make a family tree and complete it. I have some research in my room, eventually will take some time to finish it

I've traced mine back to 1704 in teh Alsace-Lorraine

Drhuryn sounds very slavic

yes well i was searching again, and I found that there are several dhuryns and it depends on the spelling. however I dont know where you figure it is in Austria, the only Dhuryns are in present day Ukraine, which was part of Russia during the Poland partition period, and not by Austria.

Ok, this is why i said Dzuryn Austria. I'm doing my family tree and i found my GGrandfathers marriage license and it listed "Austria" as a place of birth. After further investigation, i found his original Naturalization papers and copied them. Listed on the papers was his place of birth (Dzuryn, Austria). He came to the U.S. in 1903 from the German port Bremen. So, from these two documents, i know for a fact he was born in Austria (or what was Austria in the year 1889). The town may now be part of another country since i believe the boundaries changed during both world wars.

Does anyone know of or have a map of 1890 Austria??

your best bet would to be traveling to the library and asking someone there where they can order, or if they even have a map of Austria during 1890. at that time, Austria AND hungary were huge countries

Old is Correct. Austria-Hungary was a huge country with literally hundreds of ethnicities. It basically was 100 countries all garbled up into one. This was partly to blame for the start of WWI.

The Serbs were part of Austria-Hungary, and part of them got their own country and part stayed within Austria-Hungary. Nationalism was at an all time high, and the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand angered Russia, because it felt close ties with them because of their Slavic language and nation. From that you basically get the collapse of Austria-Hungary.

Well, thats one of the reasons he and his family came to America. The political climate in Austria was very unstable so they left for a better life.

good luck on doing that, i am lucky that mine is restricted to finland mostly on my fathers side
