I told my grandfather about this game-he wanted to play it-so i let him here are some things he had to say.
-first off he said that the ranger uniform was innacurate du to the fact that that the gear was not buttoned together. secondly he said thae airborne units look good. He said the infantry units are inaccurate in multiplayer. -he said the garand is very well doen as well as the thompson. he said the BAR could use some help-and he was surpriesed to see a shotgun -he said that the sounds were more than excellent. He also noted the there were excellent building models -then i showed him the video of omaha beach-he said it would be more accurate if people were throwing up on the ship -overall he said it was "very well done" ---my grandpa was with the rangers on omaha beach. he was wounded, and won a disquished service cross because he rescued seven men stuck in a crater. His brother was with the 101st airborn in operationmarket garden (battle of the buldge) so hes has a pretty good idea of what that was like too |
I was in Desert Storm. Irrelavent huh?

That's really cool that someone of "The Greatest Generation" is finally asked his/her opinion of how accurate video game interpetations of the second world war are.
My grandfather never served in World War 2, so I'm not as lucky as you are, man. Be proud, your granddad is a hero. ------------------ Grossdeutschland Division. http://dba.gamepoint.net/images/GD_Soldier.jpg http://dba.gamepoint.net/images/GD.gif |
Tell your Grandfather, Thanks, for fighting for our freedom in WWII.
He must be a very brave man. ------------------ Not so Rude, RudeDog http://www.landi.net/rd.jpg |
It's good to know that he is not offended by the game, that he thinks it is "well done".
I was wondering what veterans would think about this game... |
Yeah, he is definitely a hero. Any man that landed on Omaha beach is a hero in my book.
*nods* |
he says that the real heroes are the men he couldnt save, Hes als really cool about telling me his experiences in ww2
|
Agreed...be sure to tell him several of the people on the forum you visit are thankful for his service. My grandfather, God rest his soul, was always proud of the service he did in WW2. He served in the Army in the Pacific. He was heading for the mainland invasion of Japan when they dropped the bomb. I can say I am thankful he didn't have to go through that invasion because I might have never known him. I can't understand some of the mentality of some of the people here that are appalled we dropped it. I know alot of our men would have not come home if it hadn't been done.

Wehrmacht is just a general term for the German armed forces.

Yeah my Grandpa served in WWII as an infantry unit (not sure what group). He was on the frontline of the Rhine River. He idn't talk much about it because of some of the things he saw. Some things he did say was he saw his best bud get ripped apart by a machine gun (who survived thankfully) and also how he got a bronze star for noticing a grenade without the pin in it. He threw it just before it exploded. He also got shrapnel in he face from stepping on a mine, which he got the purple hart for. His group was the group getting ready to enter Berlin when the war ended. BTW, if anyone knows any movies about that infantry group please tell me. He took place in the major Rhine River battle and also about being the frontline to enter Berlin. I'm interested to see if he may be represented in any movies. BTW: His name was Herl "Bud" Barlow.

My dad who served in Vietnam (and got the Purple Heart) knows pretty much nothing about video games, and if I showed him AA he would think it was pretty cool. He already thinks it's a cool game, and I don't think he's seen any of the game at all, except for the pics on our Wallpaper.
But anyway, my dad got wounded 3 days after his 19th birthday, bulldozing trees in the jungle, and sprung a booby trap. He also got the Sharpshooter's Award (or something like that) in basic training (I think). |
