Because your connection sucks.

can i do anything about it?
or is it the sever that has to do something?

If you're using 56k, then get cable, since you're in England, go to an England server, US servers are too far away and create more latency.

ok sounds right because sometimes my pings 999.
yeah but how do i know if im playing on a US or UK server?

Use GameSpy and set your country in the Profile, then check the box for Servers in my country only..

Or use ASE, which shows a flag for each server.

like unreal said get ASE http://www.udpsoft.com/eye2/index.html

Get All-Seeing Eye[/url:b0f89], or GameSpy Arcade[/url:b0f89].

Or you could use the in-game browser and sort ascending by ping, and go to the lowest one available.

I'd say start with Cable or DSL they have a better chance for you to play online then with 56K. I have several friends from the UK that play here in the US and thier ping isnt that bad. Considering the distance. Try to play in
East Coast servers for which your ping would be around 150 or so. But this is as good as your connection is. So at least you can compete with the and
play in servers here in the USA. Try to stay away from West Coast servers they will put your ping in the 300 to 500 range even with a good connection

take off all the programs running on your computer also, like if you have ICQ running or something like that.

Just buy a T3 line and you can play anywhere. oOo:
