I dont know if it could be done but maybe a color burn. using the color burn tool. Thats If it dyes it to more then just black. I think it depends on the backround color. Not sure but I think burning it may work.

If you GreyScale it, which is probably your best option, it will turn it to black and white.

So the dark red around the edges will be a black or dark grey. And the lighter areas will be a light grey or white.

turn the saturation of the pic down all the way.
