build your own server..
whats the minimum requirements for building your own gaming server?
instead of renting one each month, i want to build one. i have a friend willing to host a server for me on a T3 connection. thanks |
How much of that bandwidth is he willing to give you? My server is an AMD Athalon 2G with 256k of ram. I host 8 players and everything runs fine on a cable modem
cool: |
For a server now a days you need at least a 2.0 + CPU and AT LEAST 256 MB of RAM, if not more.
|
you can probably get by on a 1.4 ghz depending on what OS you're going to be using and if there's nothing else running on the system. definately 256 megs at least but you might as well go for 512 just to be safe.
|
thanks guys.. the server i going to build will stricky be a dedicated gaming server.
i think i can get my hands on a 1.7 cpu for cheap, and i'll be using xp pro for my OS. |
i run a server on a p4 1.8 with a gig or ddr memory and a radeon 9700 pro vid card. i have a cable connection. i can host up to 15 players. the trick to that is i also run auto kick with a kick for high ping set at 200. i know thats low but only the fastest comuters with a good connection can hang. it works out pretty well.

I don't know how people can afford a T3. How much is it? Couple thousands I heard?
|
u dont need a good vid card to run a server do u??
|
yeah, is a top notch video card crucial?
well it the T3 conection is actually my school. i am take networking at a private computer school in toronto. they always do hosting as well, but their servers can't support a gaming server. but they will host my server if i get one built. |
NO Your server will not be playing the game. Your server will be keeping track of all the players, what and where they are shooting, Where they are moving, a dedecated server will only show the console.
|
oh cool. ya learn something new everday.
i had the feeling that perhaps a video card was important, but i wasnt sure. thanks for clearing that up. biggrin: |
i am very suspicious at the people at oc48gaming.com an OC-48 connection line is a backbone use in major telephone companies and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars a month.. im almost positive their service is a scam eek:
