rerveur requirement

My clan just went down so I want to put up a server. What i want to know is if i buy a pc just for that and want to run a dedicated server, what are the spec that pc should have? Processor, video card, hard drive, and what type of internet connection. The server would be a 12 player and keep in mind that the pc would only do that. I want to have a good server but dont want to buy a part that the server wont use like: does the pc need a sound card?

Sorry for my poor speling english is my second language!

Thanks !!

For a dedicated server does not need to be REAL great, but for a stable, active server, stick to stock maps, and only use a machine PIII 1Ghz or over for hosting.

I got a Power-Spec 4985 at Micro Center. A 2.4Ghz Athlon W256K L2 Cache,256M DDR Ram,40G hd, 1.44 Floppy, 52x32x52 CDRW, intergrated nic, vid, and audio, and windows XP Home for $450.00. Comes with an ok keyboard and a crappy mouse. I added another 256M DDR Ram stick for 52.00 and installed a Gforce MX 400 64Mvid card I had sitting around (MX 440 cards run around 30 to 40 dollars). I use a Belkin 2-port KVM switch and share my keyboard, monitor, and mouse with my playing machine. I run a 12 client Spearhead server through a cable modem (weekends @ 65.26.83.215:12203). I don't get complaints of lagg except on Snowy Park and Ardennes. I use the RUNNER program (thanks mohadmin.com) to configure this server. I have the Max Rate set to 3000 and Hunkmegs set to 16M. Come by this weekend and check it out.

Frag ya later

RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM RAM... ram helps servers quite a bit... + a solid band width. I have seen SOME servers that run a 12 slot server just fine with a cable/dsl connection. If not, youll have to seek a connection with a higher speed.

Thanks
I know about the good connection. But wath i need to know is what it ths minimum processor to host a 12 client server and is a built in video card would do the job , what is the minimum hard drive , i dont want to buy more than neded, i would never play on that machine.
Why should i not run custom map?
Is the first description above is the minimum???
Thanks a lot
Ill visit your server this weekend thanks!

I would say any PIII greater than or equal to 1.3 ghz will run just fine. Hard drives come standard now at 7200 rmp, and if your just running a server, 10 GB would be more than enough. For video, onboard would be just fine because a dedicated server runs nothing but the console.

Thanks again, about memory what is a lot is 512m enough? I have a unused main board for a p4 , for the same amount of money I could buy a 1.7 celeron or a athlon xp 2000+ witch one should i get .Because having the main board for the celeron ,It would be a bit cheaper but if the athlon is better ill go with that.

Thanks

I'm personally a fan of athlon processors simply because I do alot of 3D cad modeling for school and work (architecture mostly) but i would venture to say that both of those processors would suit you fine. As far as the ram goes... it depends on what type... 2100, 2700, 3200 etc...??

2100 DDR - I would get a gig if you can afford it... anything about 2100... 512MB will do just fine:)

On a side note, ive always found its best to operate ram in pairs...

get 2 x 256 mb's instead of 1x512...

thanks

I had problems untill I added the 64M video card. If you are using an onboard video it takes its memory from your ram so if your runnng 256M of ram, with a 32M onboard video, you only have 224M left.
