What's your price range?

IBM and Compaq for the brand name
Gateway cos it's cheap i guess
Dell cos it'll break-down, which will be fun (personal experience)

I'm using an IBM one right now rock:

IBM's own all laptops, except if you're an extreme gamer and have the money for an Alienware laptop, defitnitely go with an IBM Thinkpad, although i only have a T20 its so great. i run Win2kPro on it and it never crashes, decent speed, and very durable. just my thoughts...
