I'd like you opinion on this statement.

'The Thirty Years' War is an outstanding example in European history of meaningless conflict.'

Would you agree or disagree with this statement.

the Thirty Year's War is a war mostly fought in Germany, but almost all the countries were involved between the Protestants and the Catholics from 1618-1648.

I just need some ideas on this for a question i need to finish for History class.

Two religions fighting a war is pretty damn meaningless if you ask me.

My guess would be...there was no point to it at all. Why fight oevr something so stupid. We never like were told what meaningless conflict meant when givent he question.

It could be argued that we are all just victims of causality and therefore

I don't think theres such a thing as a meaningless war. Wars have been fought for the wrong reasons, but none of them are meaningless.

Anyway, I don't know enough about the 30 years war to really go into depth, and I doubt most people here do. I don't think anyone can make a judgement by reading one sentence.

It wasnt meaningless to the guys that fought it. It was fought for power, like almost all wars. With power comes territory, the spoils, the freedom to pratice what religion you want, political ideology, etc. It was probably about as meaningless as WWII, because the losers lost the ability to live as they chose.

Im taking AP Euro history as a sophomore. We talked alot about it, but i forget. I would say no war is meaningless. There is a purpose behind it all, whether good or bad......except now, with that fucker bush.

I honestly forget, the only main thing i remember was that it was fought centrally in Germany and thousands and thousands of people died. Sry dude.

the 30 years war was supposedly the fight over religion: catholicism vs. the smaller sects that broke away ie protestants, huguenots, calvinists. you could argue that it was meaningless in terms of religion because France, then europes largest catholic country, fought on the side of the calvinists just to pick a fight with the holy roman empire, their rival at the time. but this was the first time war was fought with armies of such large mass. gustavus adolf had an army with 100,000 men and kicked the shit out of the catholic armies led by albrecht von wallenstein (who was a protestant). i think you should abandon an attempt to consider this an all out religious war, but that was what lit the fuse.

Yea...It started out as a religous war but eventually everyone forgot about that real aspect over the years.
