CAN YOU PASSWORD A SERVER IF IT IS NOT DEDICATED ????

I am looking for a way to password my server. It is not dedicated and I believe it is hosted by Gamespy because the only way you can join it is through gamespy. I want to start up a game were I can password it so that when I have a large group of friends playing it will be just us. Is this possible ????
