se = SPecial ED. The non pro and se version of the 9800 are really bad. a 9600XT can compete with them.

Actually if you look at the official graphs and such there is almost no difference between the non pro and pro with 9800. The only time you will see a difference is in 1280X1024 in like 4X FSAA, which of course once you get to a certain level is pretty redundant

aa and anistropic filtering are what the big buck cards are all about. If they dont deliver at high settings then they just dint cut it. grant it that price is pretty good.

Im thinking of either buying a 9600 Pro 128MB or 256MB, or a 9800SE 128. Ive read where you could flash the 9800SE to perform as a 9800pro, is this true? and also what are your thoughts on this.

The 9800 non-pro does not suck. Its on par with the 9700pro and priced relatively reasonably. The 9800 SE sucks the big one. It is not up to speed with a 9600pro, which is cheaper by the way. Just a way to cash in on the 9800 name, think nvidia mx series when you hear SE.
