Trying to avoid the 5 bucks charge monthly from RCN I bought my own modem a Motorola SurfBoard SB5100. 70.00 @ Circiut City with 20.00 rebate.

Okay I got home installed the new modem then call RCN,to give them the MAC ID # so they can connect from there.
ME: Yes I just bought a new modem and would like to activate
RCN:Okay Blah blah blah,What's the MAC ID #
ME:762649864874 whatever number was
RCN: Hold on
ME: Okay
RCN:I see a problem
Me:What?
RCN:We can't do this over the phone.
ME:Why not ?The last time I had a tech here and installed it,he just called the dispatcher and gave the MAC ID #,waited aproximately 1-2 min and BOOM on-line.
RCN:Not this time,if you want to have your own modem,we must send a tech to activate for you,that will be 49.95.
ME:WTF I'm only buying this because I don't want to pay the 5 bucks modem rent.Now because I don't want to pay 5 bucks a month,you guys charge me 49.95 to send a tech to do what I can do it for free?
