new font, no (bevel?) and do some contrast work or levels. colors too actually, saturation lower, and put in a brown look (red + green in color adjust)

heres an advice, make a copy of the first pic, paste and set to soft light/overlay or something lika that. often improves alot.

you could also take away the black in left side and make a border.

I like that pic, but it's a little grainy. And the font has to go.

You can make the pic look smoother by:

Copying the layer, guassian blur it about 2.0, then setting the blurred layer style to soft light or overlay.
