Classical music

Any of you guys into classical music? I recently got very interested in composition and took a couple courses in my highschool for Theory and Jazz Improvization. I've come to develop an appreciation for some of the music that comes out today...especially orchestral music. I'm not advanced enough to sit down and write an orchestral song, but I've started on what they call "4 part choral writing" (with a bass, tenor, alto, and soprano voice). It doesn't have to be soley "chorus music"; I like to write some brass quartet songs. I've worked on this piece for about 1 week.

Yeah, i've learned this year that jazz really breaks every classical theory rule out there. For example, classical pieces are set in a certain key (D Major or F minor). Jazz is totally opposite. They just put in chords that make some sort of progression.

The easiest jazz progression is the 12 bar blues. If you were to create a G blues it would look like this:

[code:02ab1]4 measures of a G7 chord which would be known as tonic
2 measures of C7 chord which would be called (Submediant or IV [roman numerals for 4])
2 measures of G7 (tonic again)
Then 1 measure of D7 (which is called dominant or V for 5) and then 1 measure of C7.
Finally 2 of G7.

You can insert things called ii-V-I's which are really common in jazz.[/code:02ab1]

The progression is based off of one scale...it's really hard to explain it all in a way. I'm working on a couple jazz pieces though. I'll post some more of my stuff up.

Garry,

I love Jazz and Classical music. From Louis Armstrong to Mozart, I also enjoy a variety of "reproductions" of ancient and historic music.
From classic Irish folk music to early American music like Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie.

There is this amazing feeling of antiquity and tradition when listening to music from such histotic sources. Im not certain how old you are, but I find it refreshing and admirable that at least some of todays youth can be moved by such things.

I'm only 17 (soon to be 18). I really never liked any rock music, grindcore, pop, or any of that crap. I always liked jazz and classical...since I play trumpet in an orchestra and a jazz band I have more of a sense of appreciation than the average person.

Old Reliable 05-30-2004 11:46 AM

um, i have over 100 cds of jazz and classical...its my mainstay

It's weird how I look at music now that I actually understand it. Classical and Jazz seem to be so much more complex compared to some of that stupid pop and heavy metal crap (yeah, i called them stupid). hellfire:
