DSL vs. Broadband
 

I know this is a noobish question, but could someone break down the major differences between dsl vs. broadband. Ever since I've been gaming for the last few years, I have always had cable. I am building a house that does not have cable at this time in that area. I am able to get dsl via SBC.

My current isp offers high or low speed cable. Is there different speeds with dsl?
Will my IP be static?
Will I still be able to game with decent pings ect?
Any other info appreciated.

I've been planing on a major cpu upgrade, but it would be a waste if I am unable to online game.

If you can only get DSL, then by all means get it. Unlike cable, your IP will be static so if you host games through a router, you don't have to re-configure everytime it changes. Your gaming pings will be almost as good as cable.

DSL supposedly is more stable than cable (I haven't had trouble with my cable in over 2 yrs) but around here is more expensive (Only by a few bucks).

Don't trouble yourself over it, just go out and get the fastest broadband you can get in your new house. If it's DSL, then get it and forget about cable.

Ty Arkan. I know less than nothing about dsl. That is all that I will have access to. So your saying performance will be comparable? Does it go through the phone lines like 56k? Will I have to log on and connect? Any long distance charges?

DSL stands for "Digital Suscriber Line" so yes, it's like a phone line but you'll be connected through a modem just like cable. And like cable, you'll always be connected and only pay a single monthly fee no matter how long you're on the computer. The DSL line is independant from your regular phone line.

As for speeds, you'll be alot closer to cable than you realize when you're gaming. Only when you're d/loading a huge file will you notice the slower speeds.

i have had both for about 6 months

major diffs in gaming (30-40 ping on cable, 60-70 on DSL) and thats with 756 DSL, he'll probably get crappy 128/256 :(

So there are differnt dsl speeds? If it's not 756dsl, then it sucks ehh?

Itll do you fine, just a huge difference in price and performance between al speeds an cable.

The different speeds are controlled by the ISP. You can get 3Mb DSL just
like you could be offered a 4Mbit connection: it's all up to the provider.
Your IP shouldn't change once you've connected through the connection
application. Will you have decent pings ? Think about it: DSL... 3-4Mbit
connection. Don't download BitTorrents while playing games and you will
be fine :-)

i didnt feel like being an ass about the whole broadband thing ;)

but that higher speed DSL is insanely expensive

cable is like $30 a month for 3.5mbps here

Got a friend who has 256k DSL. Slow as shit when downloading stuff...but not bad at all for gaming. Gets pings close to mine and I have 3.5 mbps cable. Dunno why, but whatever. I download a ton of shit, so I couldn't do that, but it depends on what you need.
