Helping a Veteran of WWII: My Interesting Story
A couple days ago at work Jess who is the head of the copy center was cleaning out their lost and found bin and asked me to help. Well included in there I found a US Army Seperation Qualification Record for a soilder who served in the army from 1942-1946 as an engineer.
He served in the Pacific theater for the 1889th(i believe) building runways for planes in the Pacific. This record was basically a resume of sorts, explaining what he did, skills he possesed etc. It was to be used to help him after he left the army in finding a job. It was then signed by the captain and given to him when he left the army. Well we couldnt find a number so Jess said Toss it. I said no you know what Im gonna take it home and do some research on it see what I can find. I looked tonight and nothing major no big stories couldnt find anything on him. So I decided to type in his name and the state in google. Samuel L Blake, Michigan. At the top of the search it gives me a phone number which is in Ann Arbor, the city I work in. On a whim I dialed it up tonight and spoke to an older lady on the telephone. I asked if a samuel L Blake was available and she said no he is out right now can I ask why your calling. I told her I had this paper and found it at work and was wondering if it was the same gentleman. Well sure enought IT WAS. She was tickled pink saying shes been looking for it for awhile now and considered it lost. I told her I worked on sunday and monday and That I have it available and would like to give it back to the rightful owners. She was so happy and quite honestly it made me feel pretty good too talking to her. I was glad that I was able to find the rightful home for this documents, that even if it was minor, has some historic signifcance and is close to 60 years old! W00t! rock: rock: beer: |
