I notice that when I go into dedicated servers, there is no admin present to prevent a fast game getting laggy and out of control by people with a Flinstones modem entering the game and ruining it for everyone else. I know that when I host, I boot anyone with over a 150 ping to me, and it keeps everyone happy and coming back for more. Too bad I dont have a dedicated server up. What I am wishing for is gaining admin to one of these dedicated servers and control the gameplay for people like me. People that have a very fast connection and are very frustrated with not only people slowing us down, but not having anyone around to keep control of the server.

i hardly think its fair to say. if u got a 56k modem u cant play this game.

if they want to play they have just as much right as u to play.

i have been in servers where a guy has almost 400 ping but is good enough to keep up with the rest of the players who have 200 or less, and it did not cause everyone else to lag just because he was in there.

Peoples pings often do not go up because someone with a 200 - 300 ping has joined the server, lag stays about the same most of the time for me.

painkiller44 02-04-2002 08:27 AM

I am with you on that. This post wasnt to start a topic about how predjudice I am towards people with slow connections. However, I just believe that if a server is labeled, CABLE ONLY or FAST CONNECTIONS ONLY, people with 56k connections have no business ruining other peoples fun. I know that if I had another rig, I would set up a dedicated server and label it as described above. I know there are people out there that have the same thoughts, I just wish I knew someone with a server that I could control. Thats all I am saying.

So you mean to tell me that in a game of 10 people, if 2 or 3 people have over a 400 or 500 ping it doesnt effect anyone else? That's not true man, I realize that it is also peoples computers that factor, but slow connections are a very big reason why everyone gets hickups in-game and complain about lag.

There are other factors to consider as well. Even cable or adsl players can encounter net congestion which will occasionally launch their latency through the roof. Also, even a dedicated server can only handle as many players as its upload bandwidth will allow. If a ded. server only has 350k bandwidth (upload, NOT download)available, it will host 8 to 10 people well, but when it hits 10 or more, regardless if everyone has cable or not, everyone's latency will suffer. A ded. server hosting within its allowable range of players will not cause other players' pings to go crazy when someone with a bad connection joins.

very good point, and I notice that many of these dedicated servers out there are trying to go beyond what they are capable of handling (setting up games with 32 max players). I realize what you said about net congestion, I just wish I could get admin to a server to control such features as max players. I hate to bring this up, but in games such as CS, the remote admin works nicely for controlling the game the way the host or server admin wants to. Everyone here seems to be missing my point and getting all defensive about why the things I am talking about are happening, but frankly, all I am saying is that EVERY SERVER CAN USE AN ADMIN ON HAND.

[HOLY]Moses 02-04-2002 09:53 AM

Oh i agree with what you said! When I run my server I usually play on another networked pc and use the rcon to admin the game, but sometimes i burn out before other players do so i leave it running. I can't trust the rcon password to just anybody: my server might end up with a bad rep if some one irresponsible starts throwing everybody they don't like off, ya know? If not to throw off super high pingers then to throw off trash mouths (something i don't tolerate)!

painkiller44 02-04-2002 10:03 AM

hahaha, HolyMoses, you got that right. I guess the name of this post should have been, PLEASE SOMEONE TRUST ME WITH ADMIN COMMANDS! I guess the only way for me to get what I want is to spend a little more $$$ and buy myself a second rig. As for the curses and other things you dont tolerate, I hear ya. I wouldnt trust anyone with access to my server, unless I knew them. But I can still think about it :-) Is there a way for a server to set max ping for a client??

[HOLY]Moses 02-04-2002 10:14 AM

yup. in the server.cfg file, a few lines would do the trick. I'm at work right now so i don't have access to my server.cfg file to show you the settings, but check the BOD forum you should be able to find the cfg settings if you're interested.
BTW, its not so much foul language I hate (F@CK SH!T @SS B!TCH whathaveyou..) just when players start ridiculing other players or questioning the origins, parenthood, stuff like that. It doesn't contribute to the gaming environment. But I do think competitive trash talk is great "GET READY TO DIE BITCH" etc...
actually, here's a funny one.. I jumped on a server a couple days ago. When I got in, i said "hello folks". Some players wrote back "hi,hey," etc, except this one guy writes.. "YOU READY TO DIE MOSES??".. just as i'm turning the corner, I'm typing "BRING IT ON" an axis player comes around and i blew his head off... it was him!! Everybody got a good laugh out of it. He turned out to be pretty good competition.

thanks man for the help. Its always good to know. Oh, I talk mad trash online, but always to a degree. The most important thing is to back it up with skill. :-)
