wtf happened to my computer (help plz)

i never renewed my norton anti-virus subscription cuz my dad has the subscription number and he has no idea what hes doing, so i used to have these pop-ups that would annoy the hell out of me, esp when i played cod:uo, so when i started up, since my comp is so slow, i would ctrl+alt+del and close all these user processes like msmsgs, notifyalert, and ccapp (norton, to keep the popup from coming up)

i turn on my comp this morning and i didnt log out, its as if my comp restarted, and now i have the stupid shield logo in my tray, every time i try to get rid of it a new one pops up, its like the atomatic update thing that never updates that always pops up since two weeks ago.......and this thing has "blocked" all my programs like itunes, etc.

before i smash my comp into bits does anyone know, besides getting my subscription code, whats going on or what i can do to stop this nonsense?

Many alternatives...

Ununistall the software completely, restart and make sure you don't have anything loading on startup via registry. A god way to check is to use msconfig for registry noobs, if you don't have msconfig.exe download it from Microsoft's site and put it in your System/System32 folder. Any registry key linking Norton should be removed, but as long as you don't see anything in startup you should be ok.

Reinstall it with your key, or just find one online, most Norton products don't have unique keys. Now configure the software to not block the programs you use. I am assumning you are using a firewall via Norton Internet Security.

Cliffs
1) use msconfig
2) remove statup processes
3) if you know what you are doing, use regedit to clean out keys and links
ex HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->MICROSOFT->WINDOWS->CURRENT VERSION->RUN
4) uninstall/reinstall
5) configure

Be very, very, very careful with this. Make sure you reserach which programs your computer needs and doesnt need. I f*ed my computer up by altering these settings, I never got it to boot up right again until after I reformatted.

There isn't much to using MS Config.

Just don't touch anything that you're not supposed to.

yeah ive used msconfig a lot

i also clicked on that stupid shield icon and told windows to stop monitering norton, but i think the best thing to do would be to get that damn subscription code

i hate my computer so much its over 2yrs old and isnt set up at all for anything i want to do with it......i cant wait to get a new one

Use startup. It's a tool that I recommend to every1. It's quick, easy and clean, just a lil applet that reads your registry settings and present it in a friendly interface.

Doesn't matter which version you use, I would recommend the standalone EXE version.
