It all depends how experienced the student pilot was, if he/she was nearing there PPL then they are quite capable to land successfully in an emergiency (as they practice them reguarly). Everything all depends on the circumstances of the emergiency. But that plane was waaay too low even if that field was on the other side of the road.

I'm not aware of what it takes ot become a pilot, but, regardless, experience has to count for something, I cant believe a guy fresh off getting his aviation license will be able to fly as well under various circumstances as a 20 year veteran pilot.

No shit...I had a SUV Tbone another SUV then get plowed into by another car right in front of me doing 70 mph when he came across the grassy field between expressways and I was screaming HOLY MOTHER OF FUCKS HOLY FUCK ! Now im trying to imagine a plane next to me crashing.
