w0000000 its aliiiiiiiiiiiiive!!111

i got my new computer working last night with the help of a more intelligent resnet guy...popped in some CoD2 with max everything -- in-fucking-credible!!! the frame rate was astounding, the environmental fx were unreal, an all around incredible experience!

turns out the deal hadto do with my drivers and not necesarily the order in which they were installed, but being that its a custom machine, sometimes the drivers arent the right ones, as seemed to be the case here.

anyway, i am considering getting bf2 eventually -- any good or stick to bf1942? any other good games worth getting? and does anyone know if there will be any HDR for cod2?

geRV 11-09-2005 10:16 AM

Quake 4's worth the money, cod 2's a console ported noobified piece of shit.

If you want hdr go get halflife 2 lost coast level. Probably the best implementation of hdr yet.

Fear woulda got the nod from me over quake 4 but its engine is fucking horrible performance wise. Graphically the character models are good but the levels can tend to look very bland. Quake 4 on the other hand has a good balance of interesting environments and detail on the character models, and it runs about 100x better.

Akuma 11-09-2005 10:52 AM

Q4 didn't bring anything new the table... SP was pretty shitty and I beat it in 6 hours. Talk about repetitive... The 4 levels are the same over and over again. Only cool thing was driving the tank.

Not to mention most the people playing muliplayer have already left and gone back to Q3 or UT. I've checked the past few days at prime time hours and there were only a few servers with a good amount of people in it.

geRV 11-09-2005 10:56 AM

Games like quake Sp are never meant to bring anything new to the table, its a continuation of a game people know as a run and gun shooter, why mess with a formula that works?

Only thing fear brought that was "new" was a slow mo mode that had already been done in max payne. It has a slow mo mp mode but from playing the beta it seemed pretty lame at best.

Performance wise quake shits all over fear, ill never figure out why shadows with a slight blur to them and any kind of fsaa makes frame rates divebomb. annoy:

FEAR also has amazing AI. Crazy how well they react to your actions. I have save games right before a big battle on several levels and it's still fun to go back and replay them because it's different every time. FEAR's slow mo kicks the shit out of Max Payne's anyway. God Mode + Slow Mo + Melee only is probably the most fun I've had with a FPS since the gravity gun in HL2.

FEAR's multiplayer may suck but it's still better than Q4's DM... Slow mo makes for some interesting moments. But the melee is way too powerful.

FEAR does blow performance wise but it also looks incredible, not to say that Q4 doesn't. But if he can max CoD2 then he probably has a 7800 and will be able to max FEAR too.

ill have to demo-tize the two of em, both looked decent...i used to love playing quake 2 although i never made it far cuz i had to keep installing and uninstalling cuz i wasnt allowed to play it when it was out....

and i do know about the lost coast demo, but do you need hl2 to play it?
also, if my roommate has hl2, can i install it on my computer, esp if we are on the same LAN? and even tho steam is a HUUUUUUUUGE bitch....

how do we get HDR going in cod2? the graphics engine is sick...youre right about it being kind of a console port tho...but we can mod all that. btw, does anyone know of a uitlity to open cod2's files, the .iwd format? im assuming instead of .pk3s its .iwds

EDIT: yeah i do have a 7800 gt oc, my comp is now more than prepared to max out any of the games on the market now and for the next few months at least

Akuma 11-09-2005 11:23 AM

There is no HDR in CoD2. Only new effects are the shitty heat haze and the 2D smoke.

No you don't need HL2 to download Lost Coast, but it will take forever to dl without already having the Source files.

Id say fear on max settings with soft shadows and fsaa might say differently. ed: It'll be playable im sure but you'd probably be suprised how hard it hits your system.

Akuma 11-09-2005 12:11 PM

The patch definitely softened the blow of soft shadows. I leave them off because I'd rather have the performance.

In answer to the BF2 question..............YES. If you liked BF'42 then you'll love BF2, stunning combat, fun, tactics, vehicles, choppers. I haven't stopped playing it since I got it.

It'll take a lil while to get a few weapon unlocks from scratch but some are worth it. Maxed out I bet it looks amazing, tho mine's mostly on medium with a couple high.

You'll get addicted to it, once you've tasted good squad teamwork, once you learn how to use the attack chopper well and once you've mastered the spec op's C4, you won't wanna stop.

BF2 will last you the longest. Worth every penny IMO.

geRV 11-09-2005 12:33 PM

Bf2 will run maxed out with temporal fsaa enabled to make it look better.

Edit
Err not temporal fsaa, can't remember what the fuck the nvidia term is for the ati adaptive fsaa.
