Repair/restore... or fuc it and buy new.
With spring coming and me starting in a new job that will increase my travel drastically im left with a question. My Mr2 has seen better days and is likly looking at a few grand worth of maintainance and repair. Its paid off and im beginning to get into a situation where i can save some money in decent quantities. Leaving me to ask, do i fix up the old girl and put maybe $3,000 into it. Or do i take that 3 grand and the trade value on my car and purchase a new vehicle?
As of now i need a new: Windsheild Ac compressor Front wheel wells (plastic inserts) Suspension Brakes (minimum of pads rotors are ok) interior trim (stereo surround) stereo (old one died since it was from a car involved in a wreck) tires Heater blower Not to mention just general up keep for things such as the T tops, and engine. Paint is still in decent condition as are the seats and most of the interior. Its a daunhting list to say the least, which is why im considering a new vehicle. Being an automotive and mechanical retard, I'd sell and get something else. I wouldn't be able to do the work that needed to be done.

Keep it. Unless you need something with more room for your new job. Mr2's are nice cars and you dont see them that often. Would you fix it yourself? I would say the most expensive item on your list is tires, The most difficult to do would be windshield, maybe suspension depending on what you need to do.
I say fix as much yourself as possible. Dont buy new, go to a junkyard and get the best looking used parts as possible. Itll save you HUGE amount of money. ONly things I would buy new are the break pads, windshield(unless you find a good used one you can get out in one piece), suspension(again depending on what you need), and of course tires. I would put the cost of everything at $1,000 just becuase tires cost so goddamn much. If you do the work yourself and use used parts then you could cut that down a couple hundred. |
Buy a Jetta.

Keep it.
Is ALL of that neccessary? Are they just worn out or completely done? How much is the car worth? |

Tyres arnt actually that much. Wheels are expensive, but if your just looking at getting new tyres it should be fairly reasonable.
Most of them tasks you should be able to get from a scrappy or off ebay. |
you could get all those interior and engine parts / suspension parts from a junkyard for 400 $ total, and 1000 $ worth of labor.
and another 200 for decent all season tires. So 100 dollers to save an awesome car... WELL worth it. beer: |
