My computers audio is dead. It says theres no device plugged in, except the speakers are plugged into the proper hole. Also, the problem is not with the speakers. I plugged them into my CD player, they work fine. However, my headphones don't work in the computer. Is this a software or hardware issue, and how do I remedy it?

reinstall drivers

pci sound card or onboard? If it's onboard try unistalling the sound drivers (assuming their installed) and reinstalling them, Also, try and go to the manufacturer's website to get some updated drivers b/c the one's you have may not work properly with your os (version)

Note: turn off your anti virus protection while your running the install
