Amazing WW2 Facts....

I found this one amazing....

[quote:d0dfb]17. Among the first “Germans” captured at Normandy were several Koreans. They had been forced to fight for the Japanese Army until they were captured by the Russians and forced to fight for the Russian Army until they were captured by the Germans and forced to fight for the German Army until they were capture by the US Army. [/quote:d0dfb]

Some more facts;

"The strategy behind 'fall Gelb' was to rush through the Netherlands and Belgium to attack France and by doing so avoid having to fight mobilized armies. The Belgian fort of Eben-Emael was an obstacle in this plan. The fort was build after WWI and was one of the strongest in the world and was regarded as impenetrable. When the Germans attacked it took them just one day to force the defenders to capitulate and suffer only 6 dead and 18 injured. The Germans landed on the roof of the fort with gliders and used hollow charges to destroy the gun turrets. The interesting thing about it is that only weeks (I'm doing this from memory) before the attack there were trees on the roof, making a landing with gliders impossible. The trees were cut down in order to make place for a soccer pitch to entertain the garrison. Or how soccer caused the strongest fort of Belgium (wikipedia says of the world) to fall in just one day."

^I read about that in Grandfather's Tale. Was pretty sweet... I never even heard about it before that.

[quote:affc5]# The Russians destroyed over 500 German aircraft by ramming them in midair (they also sometimes cleared minefields by marching over them). “It takes a brave man not to be a hero in the Red Army”. Joseph Stalin[/quote:affc5] thats fucked up

[quote:b0578]Nuclear physicist Niels Bohr was rescued in the nick of time from German occupied Denmark. While Danish resistance fighters provided covering fire he ran out the back door of his home stopping momentarily to grab a beer bottle full of precious “heavy water”. He finally reached England still clutching the bottle, which contained beer. Perhaps some German drank the heavy water…[/quote:b0578]whats “heavy water”?

Heavy water is a loose term which usually refers to deuterium oxide, D2O or 2H2O. Its physical and chemical properties are somewhat similar to those of light water, H2O. The hydrogen atoms are of the heavy isotope deuterium, in which the nucleus contains a neutron in addition to the proton found in the nucleus of the hydrogen atom. This isotopic substitution alters the bond energy of the hydrogen-oxygen bond in water, altering the physical, chemical, and especially biological properties of the substance to a larger degree than is found in most isotope-substituted chemical compounds. Or something like that.

The youngest US serviceman was 12 year old Calvin Graham, USN. He was wounded in combat and given a Dishonorable Discharge for lying about his age. (His benefits were later restored by act of Congress).
how do you mistake a 12 year old for an 18 year old?

And if some german did drink the heavy water, he must have had one hell of a night.
