What should Israel do?

Clearly the Israeli offensive is not working in Lebanon or Gaza, the tactics of hezbollah
and hamas will always give them victim status no matter how much provocation they cause.

Both groups will attack with or without the go ahead from their respective "political wings"
of the same name so the chances of any lasting negotiated peace appear to be nil.

Obviously Israel has the backing of the US, who upholds their right to exist.
Just as obvious is Iran/Syrias backing of hezbollah and anyone else who attacks Israel,
but their stated aim is the total destruction if Israel, and who knows how soon they may
have the means to do just that. They could probably do it right now if they all got together
openly as they have done in the past.

In hindsight it would seem that the creation of the Israeli state was one of the biggest mistakes
ever made as far as world peace, but also they have direct historical links to that region.

so what should Israel do?...will any border re-alligning ever work? should they not retaliate to anything
and leave that to the UN? or should they admit defeat and dissolve their state and pack up?

This is how I see it:

Hezbollah is a terrorist organization.
Israel is a terrorist state based upon historical and current actions in the region.

We all know that Israel isn't going to pack up and leave, and the Syrians (Palestinians) aren't going to leave either.

I would say that yes, the state of Israel was a mistake. But this is the reality.

It's a fubared situation. UN isn't and can't do shit, they never do, and things will go on as they have been for the last, what, 1,000 years?

I think thats a realistic look at it. Maybe it's pessimistic, but I don't see much changing.

couldn't have said it any better.

It's too hard to disarm random civilians and I don't think it'll ever happen (just like Iraq and Afghanistan).

People are just going to keep dying. With a world that can see live images and communicate with eachother within milliseconds, I don't see anything changing. If it was a few hundred years ago, I think one group would just destroy the other until nothing was left and winner takes all. Something like that would never happen today.

well that would make Lebanon a terrorist state for accommodating hezbollah,
and Syria and Iran terrorist states for their input to the conflict, but we already know that,
what should Israel do about them though?

The Israeli ambassador to the UN put it best..."Once they start loving their children more then they hate us, there will be peace."

Yes, to an extent. I would probablt call Iran a terrorist state, however I really don't know ow much direct involvement they have had in this conflict. That seems more opportunistic by the isralies, us and britain to hit two birds with one stone.

I don't know. What I do know is Israel provokes others as just much as anyone else in the region. The Isralies would love to have the US an Britain come in there and wipe everyone out. And it seems a few here would oblige.

apparently the idea is to get international peacekeepers to take over s/lebanon allowing the
Israelis to withdraw and also presumably showing Israel the right way to deal with hezbollah,
perhaps they can disarm hezbollah this time like the UN resolution of 2004 dictates.

I hope the US and UK are not part of that, their presence would only be used as an excuse
for hezbollah and their backers to break any agreement, if any can be reached that is.
