why a macbook? everything you want to do with what your saying you can get a Windows based laptop to. Have you even used a MAC OS at all? Might want to try it first before you commit to mac over Windows

He could install XP on the Macbook.

ny times editor is probably using a macbook, probably a mac book pro.
i have a ibook g4 14 inch. ive seen the 13 inch and its nice. very thin and compact. the 1.83 one would be plenty enough for what you plan on using it for if you were out to save money. Also, look up your school : http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Image ... gpage.html and youll save about 100 bucks. one thing i can tell you for sure is to get a gig of memory. its still a computer. no different than using win xp. |
i have a macbook pro 15.4'' screen. its pretty awesome, i havent had any complaints about it. everything is pretty much plug and play, you dont need to install anything really. i have all the things i need for school with the mac version of Microsoft Office, my ipod plugs right in, wireless is great, and you can even get a microsoft wireless usb mouse and both right and left click works. 10/10.
its pretty expensive though, i guess. i have a really customized one. i think i have 2 gigs ram, 100 gigs of hard drive space, etc... |

If youre looking for a workhorse computer, that you dont have to pay a premium on for the price - invest in a ThinkPad.
I have a Z60T (and am thinking of upgrading to a Z61T), and its a solid machine. It weighs about the same as a MAC, has widescreen, and is manufactured by the BMW of PC's - IBM/Lenovo. One of the best features of ThinkPads is the ThinkVantage suite of software which covers you in case ANYTHING goes tits up on your machine. Installed on a hidden partition are Rescue And Recovery tools that, should anything happen, allow you to get into your machine, without booting into windows. I only had to use it once, when I wanted a fresh install of the laptop (bought mine off Ebay). ThinkPads also have an incredibly solid warranty system, where really you can tell them anything, and so long as you are under your 3-yr warranty, youll get a replacement part, or next day service. With your budget, if you were going for a MAC, I would look at an X60. They arent widescreen, but they are SUPERLIGHT (2LBS), core-duo, and have one of the most comfortable keyboards to type on. Nice bright screens (no TrueBrite™ though) and the above mentioned ThinkVantage software. It also does away with the trackpad, which seems jarring at first, but once you use the track-point, youll wonder how youve ever used a trackpad in the first place. I definitely recommend checking out an IBM retailer or a Home Depot for the above two mentioned laps. If you want any pictures - let me know. |
Thinkpad > all

I used to have a thinkpad, it was amazing. those things are top-knotch laptops, and always have been. thing is, he said he wanted something new, so a mac would be something new...
