Help dvd drive problem

I've just built my new rig and installed xp pro. ( See new system thread for specs). My dvd drive worked fine during windows installation. I tied to use the drive to load my video drivers and I get an error message saying it was only able to complete part of the reading/writing request. I've tried other CD's and DVD's to no avail. I've unistalled the hardware and rebooted. It recognizes the drive and I can even browse the drive and pull up the different program titles from the CD, but I get the error message if I click on one them. A friend told me that I might have to install windows service pack4. I really wanted to get some antivirus/ spyware software loaded before I connected to the web. Any idea's. This is starting to really piss me off. hellfire:

XP pro only has sp 2 ...so your friend is wrong there. here are some things to check:

Updated drivers
Updated Bios
Master/Slave conflict (if the bios says one things but the jumpers on the back another, this can cause issues.)

Thanks for the reply. Tried all of the above listed. After 2 days of pure frustration and one os and dvd drive change, I'm waving the white flag and taking it to a computer store for help. wallbash:

Thanks for the help!! By the time I was able to check this reply, my rig was already at the computer medic store. I have been working on that problem since friday and was all out of patience. i'm sure I'll have another question for you when I get it back. This was my first build. I'm bound to have something else pop up.

Btw have you ever had any experience with xp64. Any major advantages? I know there are some compatibility problems with some drivers and low level software. I have XP64 and was wondering if it was worth fooling with. Probably won't though with vista coming soon.

i have had little experience with it but here's a quick run down...

With the right hardware it can be quite a bit faster
there are issues with most programs since it runs 64 bit instead of 32...mostly older ones
It's practically useless with out a FULL 64 bit compatible system
