thinking of joining the air force reserve

anyone here have any friends in any reserve units? How is it? I know there is more to it than they make it look so im just trying to get a feel of what to expect if and when i sign up. Im really needing job training and money for school at the moment. Tuition even at a local university is a bitch trying to save for.So i view this as a good oppurtunity that could also benefit me in the long run. Thoughts?

Air Force is generally considered the cakewalk branch of the military with the best barracks, best food, easiest basic, and generally fastest branch to get promoted in. My dad was a Tech Sergeant in the Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was stationed in Coral Gables throughout the entire thing.

I'm in the Marine reserves so what you would go through and what I went though are totally diffrent, I cannot give you any advice....just don't be a pussy. Just remember 2 weeks in the summer doesn't always mean 2 weeks in the summer...technically it can be 2 weeks whenever the fuck they want. I went to Morocco in April one year.

Milla how long are you being called up for in Iraq?

gtboys34 11-02-2007 03:01 PM

have they trained you for anything besides fighting? Also, how much does it pay you per month?

If i could do it again, i'd probably join the Air National Guard. My buddy is a Para-jumper and they go all over the world. He's done crazy sea rescues and did 2 tours in Iraq rescuing downed aircraft.

Here's his unit:

Here's a blurb of him:
"After searching the sea, a survivor was spotted by an helicopter crew member and the two HH-60s prepared to put a pararescueman in the water to save him. TSgt. James Dougherty jumped into the water and retrieved the last living member of the crew."

I think the pay grade for Airman is $1,134/mo or something around that.

^ On Active duty

For a reservist its much less for the 2 and a half days you are at drill. As a E-3 in the Marine Corps Res. you get around 230 for your 2 and a half days of work.

And i'll be in Iraq for about 6 months

$1000 odds a month seems pretty low for active duty.

Its more like 1,200 a month for a private. But you dont pay for housing or anything like that so its decent money for a single guy

what the hell are you going to be doing in iraq?

^ having serious second thoughts!
