Many admins now are joining me and we are "pooling" banned IPs...

So if you go to some server with a different name and act like an
idiot, you may just find yourself BANNED from all of the best servers

We are not going to let you back in either. I am sorry
to sound so harsh, but these steps have to be taken
to clear out all the idiots who ruin this game

We as admins pay $50.00 to $100.00 per month to keep these servers
running so everyone can play and enjoy this game. No longer
will we put up with this dumb assed behavior

BEWARE IDIOTS - you have been warned

Folks - I have over 250 in my banning software. I would love to share it, but I do not know how to export the list from the Tiny Firewall I use to bann people.

Does anyone have any idea of how to export them?

If it's a web based interface then just use the mouse to drag-select the text itself, hit ctrl-c then paste it into notepad.

Otherwise you might be able to find it in it's registry keys or a config file in it's directory.

Warloch 08-14-2002 03:37 PM

Can not find anything in a config file... That was my original hope.

Will try a regsearch to see if I can find where it hides them.

Whats the firewall package you use?

I'll go in with you guys provided everyone is checking that the IP address is not dynamic!

There is sod all point in adding 56k'ers to this list for example. Also the lease times that cable/DSL providers have varies enormously. Eg - here in the UK some DSL ISPs will change your IP address each time your equipment is power-cycled. Given that the incumbent teleco here (BT) prefers that home users have a USB modem you can guess how many times that happens! Things are slowly changing and more people are going for routers so it's permanently connected but this still causes me problems.

Typically I'll remove IP's from the banned list after 24 hours where I know that the ISP hands out dynamic IPs. I will leave the name in there though. For the cablecos here it's not such a problem and I will typically remove the IP address after 5-6 weeks.

So how do the rest of you handle this (or have you not really thought about it)?

Daggas 08-14-2002 09:49 PM

I use a temporary work-around for dynamic IPs. It's ugly, messy, and a bit time consuming but it does work.......unless they use a major dial-up ISP.

First thing I do is grab the IP off the ban list and copy it over into Excel. Instead of placing the whole IP in one column, I seperate it out into 4. I erase the last part and replace it with a 1, and then have Excel build the remainder of the IP list to 254, so I end up with a range like:

1 1 1 1
1 1 1 2
.
.
.
1 1 1 254

I save out the spreadsheet in comma seperated value (*.csv) and then re-open it in Word and run a search/replace for all instances of the comma with a replacement value of the period. I now have a complete list of IPs that the person could obtain as long as the first 3 parts of the IP remain static. In cases that they log in with an IP of let's say 1.1.2.254 and start pulling lame crap then I make another file just like the first with the appropriate changes. From there it is just a cut/copy/paste into the banned IP list.

One thing that I do however is run 2 seperate instances of CKs Autokick on 2 differant systems. The static ban list is run on the same server as the host game while the dynamic ban list is run on a extra server that I have access to. After some fiddling I set them up to run in sequence so that they are both running 20 second scans and both running ban checks on every second scan. With some timing I managed to get it so that they run the scans opposed time wise so that the MOHAA server doesnt get swamped with 2 requests simultaneoulsy.

Pain in the ass? Yep. A lot of extra work? Yep.
Worth it? Definately. Until another solution arises I am stuck with it and with the timing set right with the scans I get no lag at all on the server.

Your plan?

How do you plan to stop the guys who spoof their IPS? I got guys who spoof their IP and changed their name to come in. However the AUTOKICK shows them still using the same IP but they can still get in. So you can ban their name and you can ban their IP but right now these guys are changin them to get in.. WHats your plan? Ban the subnet?
Ban all those innocent people. I heard someone say they use a firewall to ban them.. I got a remote server for which I pay for. Cant access the firewall.

I say ban the subnet. The way I look at it is this.....
If there is one person that comes in and acts like his mother breast-fed him until sometime last week and his crib had lead paint then your server will clear out pretty quick. I've seen it happen on my own server several times. I would rather loose 2 or 3 innocent people then 16 or 24 people just getting fed up with the actions of 1 and finding another server. It's the whole lesser of 2 evils theory I guess. One way or another, something has to give and I refuse to let the idiots win.

I use 'Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0'. Let's me bann by IP - single or any range I want and puts almost No load on the server.

I run 2 instances (24 public side - 20 private side) on an Athlon 1600+ with 768 RAM and no swap file on XP. Runs @ 20% CPU with RW and Autokick added.

Only thing so far is trying to make banned IP list portable.
