Please help before I send my PC to the afterlife!
I've got some issues right now with my PC. It's performance has dropped to total crap. Every game I play slows down to about 5 fps for a minute, then goes back up to the normal 60 fps or so, then drops back down again. This is on every game. I had this happen before just on MOH, and was able to solve the problem by defragging the hard drive. Well, that ain't working this time. It's getting really bad. It takes my PC like four minutes just to boot up. Can someone give me some ideas before I take a sledgehammer to it? mad:

Make sure you hve enough empty hard drive space to play. Quit downloading porn. ed: :P

i had somewhat similar problem. first of all make sure that there are no programs running in the background. Also get a regcleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml and clean the registry. another thing use your computers feature to search for "msconfig". then go to startup tab and uncheck as many apps as you can. If all else fails as it did in my case format your hard drive and everything should run as great.

Dude, I have 30 gigs of HD space left, even after all the porn!! ed: biggrin:
Thx for the tips, could not think of a name, I will give them a run. |
You don't need to search for msconfig, just type it in the run box. It makes a world of dfference. My PC was at 62% resource availablity before msconfig and 90% after.

Or as said earlier, REFORMAT and RELOAD. Cleans out all the garbage. Once you have a clean reload, image the partition or drive for a quick reload in the future. Notron Ghost 2002 works great. cool:

Slow computer???
Try this....
Do CTRL+ALT+DEL This will bring up windows task manager Then click on the "Processes" tab Click on "User Name" this will show you who is using the running files (for reference) Many of the things that are runing YOU DONT NEED Software will install shit you dont need and that will make your 'puter crawl Go to this site and search for each item listed: http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm Anything you find in here that is listed as "Not Needed" shut it off in the task manager If you cant find any of them on this page go to http://www.monstercrawler.com and search for the exact syntax shown in task manager Once you have disabled all the useless shit - give your computer a whirl and see how much faster it is Dont worry - shutting things down in the Task Manager does not delete anything from your computer. The next time you reboot all those things will be running again If this does not help, you may have a BAD HARD DRIVE or some major corruption in windows Ram can also go bad and cause this problem There is a windows XP utility that scans your hardware to search for problems like hard drive failures and ram memory failures - I would have to look it up =[DOA]=BallBuster |

So does using Ghost just reload programs, or does it reload all the random files lying around on the HD? Also, how many disks (CD's) does it take to do that? Thanks. |
1) Buy more memory. I didn't read how much you have, but you should have at least 128MB, recommended 256MB.
2) Increase your virtual memory. 3) Use a program that searches for bad shortcuts/links/files, etc. I recommend the Norton System Doctor in Systemworks. 4) Like Ball said, try to kill any apps that might be running in the background. |
Thanks guys for the tips, I am slowly working my way through what you all have listed. Nothing has worked yet, but I have more stuff to go through. One thing that does concern me is that I tried to scan my HD for errors using the XP utility, and got an error saying that the scan cannot be completed. I had a friend that got this same error and his HD had gone bad. mad:
By tonight I should know for sure. Thanks again for all your help! biggrin: |

I've had bad luck having Windows manage my virtual memory setting. I always set it to manual, then specify an amount (like 500MB, for example; just an illustration here.) |
Alot of people say you shouldn't go over double the amt. of RAM you have. (If you have 128MB, dont put more than 256MB of virtual RAM.) But, it has been proven that if you have sufficent HD space, you can put 3X even 4X as much. I have 512MB of RAM, and set my VM to 1500MB.

I did all of the above to no avail. I cannot even get my quickrestore cd to work. When I hit ctl+alt+delete my PC just sits there, won't even restart. Suggestions? I am starting to look at my hammer in the tool box. mad: cry:

1. What OS are you using ? Win95/98/NT/2K/XP/ME?
2. What is your current installed amount of RAM? 3. What is the current size of the swapfile min & max set at ? 4. What is the size of your registry? 5. What CPU speed? 6. Do you have any HDD errors? #2, #3, #4, #5 = My Comp > Properties #6 = Win Explorer > Select Drive > Properties > Check for errors. post the answers otherwise everyone is just guessing and if youre stuffing about switching off services and playing with memory settings you dont want that. r3mix |
