well, teh British SAS did the same thing in an embassy situation in the 80s.
It was basically the same deal as here only on a smaller scale.
As far as I understand the Russians made a feint atack in the middle of the night, making the terrorists stay awake, then a fresh commando team stormed the building at the crack of dawn, many of the terrorists were asleep. Essentially they caught them with their pants down.
