Well there wasnt tv or anything in those days, and there was usually public speakers in market places who said things that people could learn from. Like for instance, one of those speakers could of said "love thy neighbour" and the people listening to him would have thougght "ooh, thats good advice, i'll have to listen to him more often" and they would tell their friends about him, and soon loads of people would come to listen to this guy. And if this guy happened to be called Jesus that everyone started following because he gave good advice....well im sure you can see my point now.
