I'll break it down to you -

REPUBLICANS - Small Government

DEMOCRATS - Big Government

That's the gist of the two major parties. Republicans believe in a small government that lets Americans handle their own affairs, i.e. decresed health care, and welfare. Democrats of course WANT to help the litle man, so they want more money and aid for needy Spanish immigrants.
