Don't worry, Von Paulus, i also saw the series when it was on TV, and plan to get the DVD for Christmas. It's one of those shows that really shows the value of the Australian sense of humour in dire situations. It's probably a waste of time trying to explain it to anyone else. Few people from other nations would appreciate it.

For the record, the idea of the show was to show how friendship and a sense of humour can get people through really shitty situations, such as a hellish Jap POW Camp.
