Hitler was very smart in some ways, and extremely dumb in others. For example, when he invaded Poland, he basically got Britain and France to declare war on him, and the rest of the world to sympathize with the Allies. In addition, when he attacked Russia, he had to focus his military attention on two fronts instead of one. The Battle of Stalingrad alone was the worst military battle in history, with literally millions of soldiers dying there.

Hitler was also a very poor military leader. He made bold attempts at seiges and blockades when he could've concentrated his forces elsewhere.

Overall though, the Nazi thing aside, I have a great deal of respect for the German military. It was basically them against the world, and they did a pretty good job of putting up a fight.
