Make sure you have downloaded DirectX 8.1, also there should be AGP drivers for your motherboard. Check the board manufacturer, northbridge chipset drivers can actually make quite a difference...
Also make sure you have up-to-date drivers for your sound card/integrated sound. There may be a conflict between the two devices.
Personally, I have had problems with the DetonatorXP drivers. They make my network card stop functioning, and screw up my system something awful. Try the manufacturer's packaged drivers, or check for an older driver version on various websites... v.12.90 works great for me...
