Apocalypse Now isn't a really a war movie. I don't think Coppola was intending it to be. It's more of a festival film.

So you shouldn't watch iot expecting to see a whole lot of gung-ho bollocks. It's a very deep film, and for those that have the mental capacity to understand it, it's a truly great film.

I myself never got the hang of it, but I've heard other people describe it, and read Francis Ford Coppola's explanation for it. It's intending to take a very metaphorical and figurative view on war in general. That's where somebodies mental capacity and general knowledge of the world around them comes into play.

It's just one of those films that has to be understood on multiple levels....And only the Director can really fully understand it. Most Art House films fit that description anyways.
